I saw that Charlie Rangel introduced H.R. 5741, called the Universal National Service Act, one week ago. Basically a military conscription. I did some quick research and saw that he introduces this bill nearly every year. Does he keep introducing this as some kind of pipe-dream, or is it actually gaining notable attention to pass?
I served in the military for six years. I learned something rather quickly about the state of serviceman on how they view their enlistment. If the primary reason for joining the military was to willingly become a soldier, airman, seaman, … ect- these individuals were, at least, moderately happy with dealing with the rigors of military life.
However, there were those individuals that realized they had made a grave mistake by enlisting, and were terribly unhappy. So much that some, not all, did some fool hardy acts to end their tenure.
I was always in favor for conscription. Fortunately, I realized that forcing someone into military service can be more detrimental than I ever imagined.
When I was at Fort Bragg, I was astonished on the commentary by special forces officers on the matters dealing with conscription. The majority simply stated that they would rather have 50 soldiers who willingly enlisted, than 500 soldiers who were enlisted by force.
I know there exist a tremendous amount of historical context that supports this view. Honestly, I know little to no history, if someone could provide information or links it would be greatly appreciated.
