“Negative impact on health” → this is complete nonsense. Mugnaini claims here that all (non-medical) drug types used in any kind of way is detrimental to your health. He doesn’t attempt to support this statement. All I can take away from this is that his religious bias is informing him to make a statement about which he has no experience or proper knowledge of. After all, we can see that he is a minister, and that he is studying for a master in ‘divinity’ (whatever that may be).
“It is a wasteful way to spend one’s time” → This doesn’t sound very Austrian to me.
“It is mind numbing” → Again, showing he has no understanding of the topic at hand.
I hear this sentiment a lot from religious libertarians. They will preface statements about drug freedom with a condemnation of drugs. It doesn’t seem to occur to them that there are non-selfdestructive uses for them. And that is actually hugely important. When drugs are illegal, that includes the usage that is done by perfectly moral upstanding people.
When drugs are attacked by politicians, they have to demonize it. They have to act as if anything related to drugs is immoral, anti-society, exploitative, self-destructive, etc. And the religious libertarians are playing right into that.
They are ensuring that moral majority doesn’t vote against the interests that Mises.org puts out.
Most people willfully ignore the health and spiritual benefits of MJ or other hallucinagens.
We all know that it isn’t a waste of time and that it’s much better than watching Hannity or Hardball. In fact, I’d say it’s what makes bad TV worth watching.
Actually, I think that type of argument can have power. You might not be able to persuade a lot of people that drugs can be good, especially in regards to “hard drugs”. But, you can say, “Ok, I concede that point, but it makes no difference, because my conclusions are still logical.”
Most hallucinogenic drugs are mind numbing, I don’t see anything wrong with this statement.
Edit.: Also, how is arguing that drugs have negative health effects is ‘completely nonsensical’? Some drugs, if not most of them, do have some very strong negative health effects on its users.
In that case you would say something like, “even if one neglects the mountain of evidence that some currently illegal substances such as marijuana have beneficial characteristics and legitimate medicinal uses, there is still an economic as well as a moral argument to be made against prohibition.” I think Nielsio has a point. Just because you might think you can persuade more people by not trying to argue that using narcotics is not morally wrong, or that they might even have–gasp–legitimate medical uses, doesn’t mean you have to spout the same useless rhetoric as the people you are trying to sway.
Then you do not understand the physiology of taking hallucinagens. Booze is mind numbing. MJ activates parts of your brain that aren’t used all of the time while blocking off some that are. It clears dead brain cells and alters perception. ie. it helps wake people up. Booze distorts all of your thoughts and motor functions.
MJ is illegal because of economic reasons not health or crime related ones.
EDIT: I’ll stay on target. My guess is the article is meant to pander to religious people and people who need to be looking down on others. in order to justify their political opinions.
Honestly, it sounds like the same criticism people were using against my article. EDC is not an “electro-house” festival and ecstasy is not cut with heroin. Who cares? Focus on the point of the article.

I really won’t bother arguing with you. But I’d really love to see your reaction if you had to undergo brain surgery and the medical team were intoxicated.
I’m not religious and I do look down on people who take certain kinds of drugs and I think most people should.
