it’s surely a nice movie. i like the laid back and organic cinematography. however i have one essential problem with the whole film plot. the whole idea is that the shock of the end of socialism would break the mother’s heart. it makes sense to the average Westerner but is nonsensical to socialists like his mother.
throughout the whole film there is a theme of “preserving our precious way of life” which flies in face of Marxist ideology that the east Germans were taught. The idea is not living in a woolshirt and denying yourself fruits of Western decadence. According to this theory, capitalist development leads to socialism, so the Westerners would have to freeze economic development to defeat the Reds. in my mind, she would just shrug it off as a minor historical glitch instead of thinking that her world has exploded.
