Nobel Prize

Other than Hayek, has any other Austrian or Austrian-esque or anti-FRB , anti-central bank economist won the Nobel Prize?

Wikipedia has a list of winners: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sveriges_Riksbank_Prize_in_Economic_Sciences_in_Memory_of_Alfred_Nobel

Please note that there exists no “Nobel Prize in Economics”!!!

Alfred Nobel was a late 19th century Swedish chemist who got rich after having invented and commercialized dynamite (which basically is safe nitroglycerine). He testamented his fortune to institute the Nobel Prize. Winners are, according to his testament, nominated by the Swedish Academy and handed over by the Swedish king. Alfred Nobel instituted prizes in Chemistry, Physics, Medicine, Literature and Peace. NOT ECONOMICS!

In the late 1960s, more than half a century after Alfred Nobel died, the Swedish CENTRAL BANK (Riksbanken) instituted a completely new prize, and they donated new money to it cause it would too flagrantly violate the written testament of Alfred Nobels to steal his money for that purpose. This prize is called “The Swedish Central Bank’s Prize in Economics to the Memory of Alfred Nobel”. Forpolitical reasons the Swedish Academy and the king have packaged this new unrelated prize together with the Nobel Prizes. And massmedia likes to call this new unrelated prize “The Nobel Prize in Economics”, which is to dishonor Alfred Nobel. He obviously did not institute any prize in economics, because he didn’t want to! Now a Central Bank drags his name in the dirt.

These Central Bank Prize winners get their counterfeited prize money from the printing presses of the very central bank which invented this propaganda-prize. How else could a nutjob like Krugman ever win a prize?

Soon we might have a “Nobel Prize” in global warming and whatnot…

…I heard a rumour that Nobel didn’t institute a prize for mathematics becuase his wife’s lover was a mathematician.

To be honest I would respect the nobel prize a lot more if they had a prize for mathematics as well and if they removed the money prize. As if scientific discoveries need to be awarded with money.

Perelman proved the case once and for all I guess.

As for Paul Krugman , I heard that guy talk and I get a feeling that he knows nothing about economy!!

I don’t think any of the other winners could be concidered purely “Austrian,” but I think a lot of them respect Hayek. I think Vernon Smith (or something like that) was supposedly influenced by Hayek and Mises.

Buchanan is Austrian to an extent.

His personal hero is Alexander Hamilton, the father of Central Banking in America.

And his Cost and Choice: An Inquiry Into Economic Theory is a wonderful defense of Austrian subjectivism.

Keep in mind that the great majority of Austrians throughout history have not been anarchist: Kirzner, Hayek, Mises, Bohm Bawerk, Menger, Weiser (granted, he was a Walrasian), Lachmann and others.

And he supports tariffs, the American mercantilist system, and strong central government power over the economy.

you can be a great economist, and be a misanthrope, and use your knowledge of how interventionism hurts to wreak your havoc.

value free austrian economics. The more he understands austruan economics, the more the misanthropy shows. no?

And he hates puppies.

Your point? Hayek was a social democrat, would you say he wasn’t an Austrian (ignoring the fact that he had one foot in the Austrian camp and another in the Walras camp) because of it?

His conclusions do not preclude him being an Austrian, it’s possible that an Austrian could be just that and still support socialism.
