One of the sentences in that piece: “Should we not have been patriotic toward the southwestern states before we stole them from Mexico?”.
I don’t know a lot about the Mexican-American War, but wasn’t the Texas Revolution (and its further annexation to the United States) due to the Texan citizens wanting Texas to be a sovereign state after the Mexican Constitution was thrown out and a more centralized Constitution put in its place? And then I was pretty sure the Mexican government invaded Texas, which had annexed to the United States, and therefore invaded the country’s territory.
I understand it’s much more of a state/government problem rather than individuals, but can you explain to me what he meant by us “stealing” the territories from Mexico?

This pretty much sums it up for me as well. The rights blatant war fetish and patriotism is the most unbearable thing in all of modern politics, no matter how much leftist babbling may annoy me. As much as I hate the whole “green” thing, you have to admit it at least sounds a hell of a lot better and more sane than “100 years in Iraq”
Also related and even worse are the not entirely insignificant percentage of right wingers who seem to love barbaric era “Germany”(or if your lucky semi barbaric Sparta).,This is sort of the “patriotism” and war lovin’ conservatism 2.0, and is even more obnoxious. To actually desire “berzerker” loin cloith culture is not my idea of a non retarded political philosophy.
I think Liberte wrote something about this in her blog not too long ago, and if I remember correctly used the phrase “D&D political philosophy”, which about sums it up.

@Brian, Texas was its own republic for 9 or 10 years, I believe. They did secede thanks to Santa Anna dismantling the previous Constitution. Mexico’s war with Texas occurred before Texas was annexed. The broader point was that America provoked war with Mexico when trying to steal Arizona, Utah, etc.
This is after Texas annexed, I’m assuming? And, also, didn’t Mexico keep trying to invade Texas, though?
Oh yeah, I don’t know what I was thinking when I said the war happened prior to Texas’ annexation. You’re right on that account. Mexico did attempt to retain Texas even after the revolution. Regardless, the war was not fought for the safety of Texans, but rather for the goal of acquiring the Western territories.

I guess that depends on value sets, and if you are asking me personally if I would rather be in the world of 300 or Conan the Barbarian, or maybe even Medeval feudalism, if we want to take this out a little further or Chicago, Il. It also depends on what you mean by tribalism. For the most part, I am not a “loincloth, axe weilding, “Germanic” odin worshipping” type of guy. I am more of a cosmopolitain, “Greek”, and “Eastern Christian” at heart. I love me some plumming and Doestoyevsky.
