Funny how no one seems to remember that, only Pinochet’s “atrocities”.
I have a question for you: what happened to the Chile’s pension system?
A few years back there was a talk in the US about reforming Social Security system here (didn’t go anywhere, seems like everyone is ok with it going bankrupt). One of my pro-Democrat coworkers was adamantly against privatizing SS citing Chile as an example of disastrous privatization policy. Is it true?
The Chicago School had zero involvement in Pinochets economic policy.
Chile`s pension system is both public and private.
I don’t know of any “disaster” in the private sector. Of course if you believe privatization is a “bad thing” you are already predisposed to hate the idea of a private association managing your retirement funds.
I personal think it was a good idea to give the workers a choice outside the state pension system, besides the private system terminated one of the most vicious practices in the old system, none really knew how much money was being received by the state and how much a single worker contributed to the mutual funds, with the private system you get only what you contributed to it.
Well I would say they were at least influenced by the Chicago School ideas.
After all, the ingeniers of the chilean economic recovery plan had acquired their PhD degrees there thanks to the exchange program between the Catholic University of Chile and the Economic faculty of the Chigago School, during the 50s and 60s.
No way! That expensive suits, the Rolex, the Gargoyle sunglasses - Pinochet was a baller. And that awesome cape!
Basically, Pinochet was better than Allende (in my opinion), but no he wasn’t the friendliest man in history. He was, after all, a politician. And even if you’re not a libertarian moralist - and I’m not - it’s not exactly an empirical stretch to say that politicians are often dicks.
There is a funny story to that photo.
Pinochet once said that he used that scary black eyeglasses that time so the marxists wouldn’t know what he was thinking.
If you see the original live footage of that scene you can see his eyes, behind those black eyeglasses, moving left and right very rapidly, like he was nervous or wondering what to do next.
