My college’s history department will be hosting a movie festival in March and I am looking out for libertarian movies with historic themes that could be suggested for filming. Please help.
Hopefully I can download the movies you guys suggest. It’s hard to get DVDs of most english movies here in India.
Oh this is quite easy. I could pick out names from already commonly known movies.
Gone With The Wind - Movie about how a woman struggles to maintain her enterprise, and protect her wealth, even as post-war collapse in American South leaves her hungry and nearly ruined. A good contrast between men, who destroy civilization with pointless wars, and women, who build back civilization through putting efforts in constructive work.
All Quiet on the Western Front - Movie that denounces and criticises the idea of killing people in the name of patriotism and serving your country.
Bridge on River Kwai - Movie that mocks again senseless patriotism in the name of doing duty, even when it needlessly kills many people of your own side who needed to be protected most.
If you want less well known names, then you can obviously try Battle of Algiers.
Jackie Chan’s Drunken Master. Private dispute resolution system.
The first or second one?
If I’m correct, there is more than one Drunken Master, I don’t remember if Jackie Chan was in both, but I remember distinctly the one where it involves the British taking Chinese artifacts to put into museums, I don’t remember the plot of the other one.
There are two and you are talking about Return of the Drunken Master. The second one.
Do you by any chance know the name of a movie he was in that involved a book that had special powers and he’d strap it to himself in fights?

3 Amazing comedies:
“Duck Soup” by the Marx Bros. A pre WWII film poking fun at the rise of “strong govts” and the madness they produce. Also one of the funniest and anarchistic films ever
“The Americanization of Emily” a WWII comedy that is the best anti war film I know of. One of it’s main theme is individualism and how collectivism leads to insane things like massive warfare. Plus it is damn funny.
Dr Strangelove. A satire of cold war politics, bureaucracy, and how inept govt leadership is catastrophic, it too is very funny
Appaloosa - great movie by Ed Harris set in the US West. It illustrates law-for-hire and the Western US circuit court system which was strongly common-law based.
