Agreed. But, the context was, Newt said, Ron is a liar. He was not drafted, for such and such reasons. Ron basically said, he had the exact reasons and was drafted also. Newt looked confused and stupified and the host quickly moved on to something else.
Gingrich was in college at the time and being married was useful for a deferment, at least to my knowledge, for those who were going to be drafted as privates. I don’t think this deferment applied to doctors, which Ron Paul was.
However, the media and Fox will spin this into saying, “Paul doesn’t know what he’s talking about, look, here’s why Gingrich wasn’t eligible.” This assumes that Gingrich could not have volunteered. For any of those who preach the merits of sending off others (usually poor) to die for a given cause, they should be the first in line to support the cause on the battlefield (if they aren’t disabled or old or something of that sort). Mitt Romney was an anti-anti-draft protestor but got out because of his “Mormon mission” status (I would wager his dad, governor of Michigan at the time, pulled some strings in addition to that). This is the point of Ron calling him a “chickenhawk”, because Gingrich supports expansive foreign operations and military operations yet did not have the courage to put his life on the line at the time.
Even so, I won’t blame draft dodgers for anything. They have every right to try and escape enslavement. But Paul is playing off of the boobs’ value of “protecting the homeland” and “answering the call.” He is trying to expose them for being inconsistent hypocrites. Chickenhawks have to be criticized.
Exposure of chickenhawks will destroy the pro-war movement in this country.
Who said anything about it being good? Maybe you should look at the context.
