Perchance, might it be possible to create a list of songs that are a direct appeal to liberty and freedom of choice? It seems hard for me to find many songs like that. I do have this song though:
Cat Stevens If You Want To Sing Out Lyrics
Well
If you want to sing out
Sing out.
And if you want to be free
Be free.
'Cause there’s a million things to be.
You know that there are.
And if you want to live high
Live high.
And if you want to live low
Live low.
'Cause there’s a million ways to go.
You know that there are.
You can do what you want.
The opportunity’s on.
And if you find a new way
You can do it today.
You can make it all true.
And you can make it undo
You see.
Ah
It’s easy.
Ah
You only need to know.
Well
If you want to say yes
Say yes.
And if you want to say no
Say no.
Cause there’s a million ways to go.
You know that there are.
And if you want to be me
Be me.
And if you want to be you
Be you.
Cause thee’s a million things to do.
You know that there are.
There are those who think that life has nothing left to chance;
A host of holy horrors to direct our aimless dance.
A planet of playthings,
We dance on the strings
Of powers we cannot perceive
“The stars aren’t aligned,
Or the gods are malign…”
Blame is better to give than receive.
Chorus
You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.
You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill;
I will choose a path that’s clear
I will choose freewill.
There are those who think that they were dealt a losing hand,
The cards were stacked against them; they weren’t born in Lotusland.
All preordained
A prisoner in chains
A victim of venomous fate.
Kicked in the face,
You can’t pray for a place
In heaven’s unearthly estate.
Chorus
Each of us
A cell of awareness
Imperfect and incomplete.
Genetic blends
With uncertain ends
On a fortune hunt that’s far too fleet.
“On The Silent Wings of Freedom” By Yes perhaps? Of course you can find a thousand different meanings from Jon Anderson’s lyrics, but it’s definitely there if you dig into it.
On the silent wings of Freedom
Where I offer myself midst the balancing of the Sun
On the winds of Celestial Seasons
That would carry me on, midst the balance of being one
On the dream of our love Eternal
That will eventually bring our living once more with you
Where we are coming from
Or where we go
We only know we come with sound
Where we are coming from
Or where we go
We only know we go around and round
On the back of your forty-second screamdown
Do you choose to be lost midst the challenge of being one
On the flight of regardless feelings
As you hurtle to fear midst the challenge of everyone
— | —
On the darkest night so painful
Do you hunger for love midst the torture of being one
On the passing light of Easing
Have you seen you inside midst the being of Everyone
To the common goal of Freedom
Where we offer ourselves midst the balancing of the Sun
Where we are coming from
Or where we go
We only know we come with sound
Where we are coming from
Or where we go
We only know we go around and round
You know, I was just listening to the Violent Femmes “Waiting for the Bus.” No, it’s not philosophically deep and I’m pretty sure they aren’t libertarian, but the song is a pretty funny observation on the failure of public goods and services, whether they realized it or not.
Some songs with the freedom spirit:
Taxman - The Beatles
My Life - Billy Joel
Fortunate Son - CCR
Truckin’ - Grateful Dead
American Woman - Guess Who (actually crticizes American foreign policy)
Imagine and Give Peace a Chance - Lennon
Authority Song - John Mellencamp
Justice and Independence - John Mellencamp
Free Bird - Lynyrd Skynyrd
Another Brick in the Wall - Pink Floyd
Ride the Wind - Posion (don’t laugh, actually some poetic, free-spirited lyrics)
Song title: Anthem
Artist: Rush
Album: Fly By Night (1975)
Know your place in life is where you want to be
Don’t let them tell you that you owe it all to me
Keep on looking forward, no use in looking 'round
Hold your head above the crowd and they won’t bring you down
Anthem of the heart and anthem of the mind
A funeral dirge for eyes gone blind
We marvel after those who sought
The wonders of the world, wonders of the world
Wonders of the world they wrought
Live for yourself
There’s no one else more worth living for
Begging hands and bleeding hearts
Will only cry out for more
Anthem of the heart and anthem of the mind
A funeral dirge for eyes gone blind
We marvel after those who sought
The wonders of the world, wonders of the world
Wonders of the world they wrought
Well, I know they’ve always told you
Selfishness was wrong
Yet it was for me, not you
I came to write this song
Anthem of the heart and anthem of the mind
A funeral dirge for eyes gone blind
We marvel after those who sought
The wonders of the world, wonders of the world
Wonders of the world they wrought, wrought, wrought

American Saturday Night
Posted: 29 Apr 2010 08:05 AM PDT
In these xenophobic times, I just heard Brad Paisley singing American Saturday Night a song that came out last year. The closest thing you’ll hear to a pro-trade, pro-immigration pop song:
She’s got Brazilian leather boots on the pedal of her German car
Listen to the Beatles singing Back in the USSR
Yeah, she’s goin’ around the world tonight
But she ain’t leavin here
She’s just going to meet her boyfriend down at the street fair
It’s a French kiss, Italian ice
Spanish moss in the moonlight
Just another American Saturday night
There’s a big toga party tonight down at Delta Chi
They’ve got Canadian bacon on their pizza pie
They’ve got a cooler full of cold Coronas and Amstel light
It’s like were all livin’ in a big ol’ cup
Just fire up the blender, mix it all up
It’s a French kiss, Italian ice
Margaritas in the moonlight
Just another American Saturday night
You know, everywhere has something they’re known for
Although usually it washes up on our shores
My great great great granddaddy stepped off of that ship
I bet he never ever dreamed we’d have all this
You know everywhere has somethin’ they’re known for
Although usually it washes up on our shores
Little Italy, Chinatown, sittin’ there side by side
Live from New York, It’s Saturday Night!
It’s a French kiss, Italian ice,
Spanish moss in the moonlight
Just another American, just another American,
It’s just another American Saturday night
