I was just talking about how trends in information and technology will eventually undermine the support base for the state in this thread: Where did the state come from?
I just want to say that some of this change is happening today. For the first time ever in my own experience, people no longer believe that the concepts of Austrian economics and of libertarianism are crackpot ideas. To be sure, many still do, but more and more people do not. They might not be able to name these concepts by name, but they’ve heard others talking about them, and as the government becomes more and more bent out of shape, these ideas resonate with them.
In my own journey, I have only very recently begun to accept the possibility of panarchism as a feasible and practical way of doing things. Until then, I was what you could call a pseudo-minarchist. However, my journey began as a consequence of the GFC. Before then, I cannot say that I had even heard of Austrian economics, and libertarianism seemed to me to be a strange fringe group. My beliefs were decidely a part of my ignorance back then, but not only that, it was also due to my not seeing anything significantly wrong with the current order. Indeed, I thought that western democracy was the pinnacle of civilization 
This is what the state was very successful at doing in the past, but less so today: moving its subjects to true believership.
As I’ve learned more about the vast wealth of knowledge that I’ve been missing out on all these years, I am slowly convincing other people of the merits of the same. The cat is out of the bag, and I don’t think it can be let back in.
This forum has done an incredible job in educating me and others, and has greatly improved now that some of the radicals have toned down their rhetoric somewhat. The same guys that called me a supporter of nazism and rape because of my belief in subjective ethics and my old support of minarchism. You guys almost made me quit these forums in disgust, but I see that things have been cleaned up a lot since then. Great job on the part of the moderators in making that happen!
It’s all good to preach to the choir, but I believe that there are additional forums out there that could benefit from the Austrian viewpoint. There are many incredibly intelligent and thoughtful people on these forums, and other people could benefit from the knowledge. For example, take these two blogs:
These blogs both have a lot of visitors and influence; If even a few visitors read Austrian rebuttals in the comments, then they might be interested in learning more about what the Austrians have to say, and they might then come to the site and learn more. They might then go on to tell their friends about what they have learned. I know that I have.
Petty differences aside, all of us here already believe in liberty and voluntarism. Discussion and argument amongst ourselves helps to refine our ideas, but I believe it’s even more effective if some of that energy was directed toward people who are completely unaware of Austrian economics and libertarianism.
What do you guys think? I’d like to hear some of your suggestions and tips on spreading the movement, and also about your own journey toward liberty and freedom. Words and ideas are important, and I believe that this site has some of the most important words and ideas for our times.
