Steroids

I’m not very concerned with whether this should be “legal” or not to do in the world of sports. I just want to know some of your guys/gals thoughts on their effects. Do steroids make you “stronger” or “faster?” I understand that they allow you to bulk up really quick but when someone in sports takes steroids, will this allow him or her to become stronger then he would be without taking them?

I ask this question because of what is currently going on with Overeem (UFC). People believe that he takes steroids, especially since he is apparently late with supplying his test in order to fight in the upcoming bought with Brock Lesnar.

It sounds like you’re specifically saying this isn’t a philosophical, legal, or moral question, but rather a physical science question. In other words, you’re not looking for any input in the realm of major focus for this forum, but rather input in a realm that is not at all in the area of expertise (or possibly even major interest) of those who frequent here.

Good luck…but don’t expect a lot of authoritative answers!

That being said, I didn’t realize there was any dispute that anabolic steroids ultimately make you stronger and faster…

If it does make you stronger and faster, then you’ve answered my question.

Also, I’m a little unclear as to whether the use of steroids is ultimately a state regulated thing in sports, such as in MMA organizations like the UFC, or not.

Again, I always thought that steroids allow you to bulk up quicker then you normally would be able to but whether it gives you a much greater advantage over your opponent (again, using MMA as an example), well, I was a little unclear about whether it was worth doing just for that or not.

Yes, they work as advertised. Judging from pics of Overreem from years ago to now, he is most definately using them as evidenced by his large jaw muscles.

Steroids enlarge muscles not included in the training regime too. Big jaws are ussually a good indicator.

Your best bet is to go to a bodybuilding forum, most of them allow open discussion of steroids. I can tell you from experience that steroids will make you bigger, stronger, faster, and healthier whether or not you want it.

Nearly everything bad you’ve heard about them is pure propaganda from pharm corporations and government. They will make you superman, from your physical appearance to your health—UNLESS YOU ABUSE THEM. I never took nearly as much for nearly as long as anyone else I knew, and I never noticed anything but benefits.

To address a political-philosophical issue with steroids, it’s my belief that the world would be a much better place if they were not outlawed, and that is the ONLY reason they are outlawed. They can make your wounds heal like something from a movie, they can make you overcome an illness like you never had it, and they can make your manhood grow bigger than it otherwise would (if used properly during puberty). Imagine the social implications of people being healthy, phisically attractive, and (at least for young men) sexually confident from a young age…

Sounds to me like fairy dust from this side of Awesomeworld. Nothing but upside…with some effects I’ve never even heard of (and that don’t even make biological sense).

Makes one wonder why you would ever stop taking such a wonder drug.

Shouldn’t be too hard to figure out, the government’s got it on lock for a reason.

Albeit with the amount of mouthing off Overeem does his jaw muscles hardly lack for exercise.

Oh do they? And what reason is that?

Implying they don’t, and that you can’t fathom the many reasons? I call BS, simply because I know you’re smarter than that.

If you can’t name any reasons, just say so.

If you disagree, just say so.

The reasons are so obvious to everyone on this forum including you that I won’t offend myself or anyone by implying that they need to be explicitly listed.

I honestly don’t know what reasons you would give as to why “the government has it on lock.” I could certainly venture a guess, but I honestly asked because I want to know what you actually think. Sounds to me like you’re not too confident in your belief.

OK confidence police lol…Sounds to me like you’re playing devils advocate.

You already know why the government regulates and intervenes, as does (probably) everyone who frequents these forums. But since you’re making this silly, I’ll humor you (aaah, clever, I know…): power.

If steroids have “miracle” properties (and they do), I don’t believe you can’t fathom why they would want to regulate them.

So let me get this straight. Steroids have “miracle properties”, that make you Beast, Wolverine, and Ron Jeremy all in one, and have absolutely no downside. They are outlawed because of “power”, and the fact that the world would be a better place if they weren’t outlawed.

Did I miss anything?

They obviously have an advantage in terms of increasing the size of their, and their heir’s junk. Being the insecure sociopaths they are, they wouldn’t dare let this “real” steriods info out, and thus be give up the big-junk luxary.

I mean, how else will they get all the opportunites to cheat on their wives?

Now we’re saying it’s outlawed because the politicians want to keep steroids to themselves…because that’s the only way they’d be able to cheat on their wives?

This is where we are on this now?

"Did I miss anything?"
Yes. You, sir, missed everything. What’s your point?

Yes, steroids have miracle properties. Do you deny this? No, they don’t make you wolverine, beast, or ron jeremy, unless perhaps you consume psychedelics as well. Perhaps you’re already on psychedelics, that’s a very colorful misrepresentation of what I actually said.

I never denied that they can have downsides. Do you deny that?

Yes, they are most definitely regulated because that gives the regulators and their friends power. Do you deny that?

Yes, the world could be a better place if the government got out of the way in this market. Do you deny that?

I count 5 questions in this response. I answered your questions, now it’s your turn to participate instead of instigate.

I don’t think it’s illegal because of it’s strengthening properties but because of a need to cater to popular opinions about cheating and good old white bread american values. People constantly want to write behavioral law so that everyone behaves like everyone else.

That being said, the dangers of steroid use are far overhyped, as can be expected with most criminalized non-aggressive things. Intelligent (?) users employ post cycle therapy to reallign their hormonal structure. This practice greatly reduces the popularly known effects like shrinking testicles, acne, and behavioral problems associated with hormone imbalance. Also, steroids don’t actually make you stronger per se. It depends on which kind you’re taking. The most popular one, Dianabol, increases your body’s recovery rate so you still have to train hard to get stronger.

I don’t do steroids by the way. I realize this sounds hypocritical, but can this thread die now? It never required the advice of the Mises community specifically; like going to bodybuilding.com and asking economics advice.

My point is you make steroids sound like fairy dust from this side of Awesomeworld. Nothing but upside…with some effects I’ve never even heard of (and that don’t even make biological sense). And it makes one wonder why you would ever stop taking such a wonder drug.

mir·a·cle /ˈmɪrəkəl/ [mir-uh-kuhl]

noun

  1. an effect or extraordinary event in the physical world that surpasses all known human or natural powers and is ascribed to a supernatural cause.

I’ve never heard of any property to steroids not being able to be explained by natural science, and I’ve certainly never heard it described as of a supernatural origin. So I would not necessarily say I “deny” that steroids are some kind of supernatural substance, (I guess anything’s possible), but I would say I highly doubt it.

You’ve never mentioned any, and in fact you actually said “Nearly everything bad you’ve heard about them is pure propaganda from pharm corporations and government.” I don’t have to ask if you deny that you said that, because it’s right there, and I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt that you’re not stupid enough to claim you didn’t eat the cookie as you’re chewing it.

I haven’t heard any benefit to this, at least not from you. The closest thing we’ve gotten is an implication from a NonAntiAnarchist that the politicians are using steroids so that they can cheat on their wives, and they don’t want non-politicians to be able to do that like they can. Frankly, that sounds like a stretch to me. Quite ridiculous in fact. And unless your contention is that the politicians are using steroids and are thus “bigger faster and stronger” than men who don’t use them, and thus this makes them more powerful, I have no idea how regulating steroids gives anyone power.

If anything, I would think one would have to have power before they are able to regulate anything.

The world would be a better place if the government got out of the way of every market. I don’t see what this has to do with the reason they are regulated.

Well then please, by all means enlighten me.

Here is what you said: “steroids will make you bigger, stronger, faster, and healthier whether or not you want it. […] They can make your wounds heal like something from a movie, they can make you overcome an illness like you never had it, and they can make your manhood grow bigger than it otherwise would.”

Yes, you didn’t actually say the words “wolverine, beast, or ron jeremy”, but you sure did paint the picture. You described all their special powers, and even used the words “like something from a movie”. Unless you’re unaware of the X-Men, and thought I was actually talking about animals, I don’t see how you can claim what I said was a misrepresentation of what you said. It was just a quicker, more entertaining way of saying essentially precisely what you said.

Let’s also not forget the pretty self-explanatory “They will make you superman”.

–So, we’ve established that you think steroids have “miracle properties” that “make you superman” and give you supernatural abilities “like something from a movie”…but saying they make you like a superhero is misrepresenting what you said.

–We’ve established that you think regulating steroids gives people power (although I’d still like an explanation of that one).

–But it doesn’t sound like you’re owning up to claiming that you believe steroids are outlawed because the world would be a better place if they weren’t outlawed…even though you literally said “it’s my belief that the world would be a much better place if they were not outlawed, and that is the ONLY reason they are outlawed.”

Your question of whether the world would be a better place if the government got out of the way is essentially a strawman, as I never even implied that I disagreed with that notion. My only mention of “the world being a better place” was in reiterating your contention that that is directly related to why steroids were outlawed (in fact not only related, but the sole cause). The fact that you create such a strawman is curious, as it makes one wonder if you’re now trying to back off from your previous statement as to the sole reason steroids are illegal.

Are you now denying that that is “the ONLY reason”?
