I’m streaming it on Netflix. Very eye-opening. Most telling are the memories of many of the older women of Kabul before all the fighting began. It was a modern city filled with life, technology and business. We’re supposed to believe “The Taliban” came out of nowhere and plunged the country into strife based on “Islamic extremism.” I don’t buy it. We’re supposed to believe that Afghanistan has been torn apart by “civil war.” I don’t buy it. I see the Soviets came in and destroyed half the place then later the United States government came in and destroyed the other half that the Taliban hadn’t strangled to death. The Taliban received large support from the CIA-aligned (controlled?) Pakistani ISI.
The plight of Afghanistan reminds me a lot of the plight of Somalia. The native culture and social structure of both countries is rich and deep but both countries have been brutalized by alien elements (Islamic Courts Union in Somalia and the Taliban in Afghanistan) and subjected to repeated interference from Western powers (Somalia was colonized by the Italians and the British). To add insult to injury, the Western talking heads talk about countries such as Somalia and Afghanistan as if these alien elements were somehow an integral part of the culture all along. The Taliban has only been a significant part of Afghani life since the mid-1990’s. The Islamic Courts Union have been a significant part of Somali existence only in the '00s.
The Afghans didn’t ruin their country. Their country was thriving until alien elements infiltrated and invaded and began destroying it from within and without. Stop blaming the victims.
