I just had this argument with my Grandpa who is a Liberal.
He is for this reform and argued that its because insurance companies were making money they don’t NEED
I find this very curious. Who is your Grandpa, or anyone else, to tell someone how much money they do or don’t need?
Also, is it a crime or an evil to make more money than I need? Has Grandpa always worked just enough to stay alive and live in a cave wearing rags? Has he never worked more to have more?
off of denying people plans
They made money by refusing to insure someone? Well I am about to become the richest man on Earth. I hereby refuse to insure all 6 billion people on this planet.
Maybe I misunderstood. Maybe Grandpa means that they were making money insuring many other people, but refused to insure Mr A, who they saw was very likely to get sick and therefor probably cost them money. Is this wrong or evil? An insurance company is a voluntary organization, nobody’s slave, free to accept or refuse anyone they see fit. Naturally they accept only such people as will probably make them money.
Let us consider a grocery store. The owner is visited by his supplier. ‘I want restock on Brands A, B and C, please,’ says the grocer.
“Why do you never take any brand X?”
“Because it’s garbage and no one will buy it and i will lose money.”
“You dastardly villian, refusing to include Brand X in your stock.”
I think the analogy is clear.
One may argue. are sick elderly people to be treated like boxes of cereal? Well, of course not. Those who have the heart and the concern for them, family, friends, charity organizations, do not see them as cereal boxes at all. Even I, who don’t know them personally, extend my sympathy, although not my money, which I prefer to use for things which are none of your concern. But an insurance company, whose sole goal is and should be making money, should of course have a dispassionate view when considering someone. The agent owes this not only to his own wallet, but to his customers as well. After all, if Mr Dying is accepted into the club, someone will have to pay for his hospital bills. Which means all the other customers will have to pay for it, by being told that from now they have to pay higher monthly premiums. No way to run a business.
or making them pay for a plan and then suddenly dropping them.
I personally know of people to whom this did NOT happen. Like my parents. The insurance companies lost a bundle on them.
Instead I think this revenue will be used toward subsidies
Which we have hopefully agreed in previous posts is nothing but evil theft. And if we haven’t, reread the earlier posts.
and funding the system.
What does this vague phrase mean? Were the insurance companies, who were supposedly making money they didn’t need, unable to “fund the system” until now?
With a rate of %85 Insurance Companies will need a more fiscal budget,
With a rate of 85% they will close up shop and look for a better way to invest their money.
and will have to accept people,
This is an outrage, as explained above.
and cut down on Private Jets and the CEO’s salary.
What right do you have to deny them Jets and salary? is it your money?
“Its called helping people” as my liberal Poli Sci teacher says,
Your Poli Sci teacher is very liberal indeed, very liberal WITH OTHER PEOPLE’S MONEY. What right does that smug self righteous villian have to put his greedy hands into my wallet and then have the gall to lecture me on ethics?
it’s not called helping people, it’s called theft on the grandest scale. Not to mention that it’s called hurting people and leading entire countries and generations to impoverishment. Reading even the most basic materials on this site explains quite clearly why.
“Helping people” is a wonderful concept, the cornerstone perhaps of civilisation. But only if you help people with YOUR OWN MONEY, not if you rob from someone else to help people. That hypocrisy is perhaps the great destroyer of civilisations.
“something this ‘free market’ doesn’t seem to grasp”.
Your Poli Sciteacher doesn’t seem to grasp that very soul of the free market is to help people. Whoever helps them best makes the most money.
“Ah, but you don’t give them something for nothing.”
“Aren’t they even ashamed to ask for forced handouts? Have they no pride, no dignity? Or is their ethical character that of Ghengis Khan, take it by force and gloat?”
Also, you Poli Sci teacher doesn’t grasp that this free market has already helped him personally. It is what created the wealth of this nation that enables him to be a well paid useless mouth to feed. EVERY non free market society that ever was in all recorded history had only dismal poverty and worse as a given. Read and listen to the materials on this site. it’s all explained very clearly.
Oh, one last thing. Don’t kid yourself into thinking that Obamacare will improve or even retain the present amount of health care you get for your money. There is an economic law, as inevitable and as reliable as gravity itself, that states, “Everything the govt gets involved in turns to shit.” The evidence for this is, again, on this site in clear language.
