Well here’s one: what is called “insurance” is not what insurance is. What sense does it make to “insure” against regular check-ups? How much would it cost companies to “insure against” those? Bastardizing the meaning of that word in legislation is a problem that is affecting current practice.

Because patients are no longer consumers. The reason, of course, is 3rd party reimbursement. Don’t you find it amusing that we might drive a few extra blocks to save 3 cents for a gallon of gas, or we clip coupons to save a quarter on a box of cereal, yet we do absolutely nothing to contain health care costs if we are insured. We don’t care what an MRI costs. We are clueless to the fact that a drug might only prevent 1 extra heart attack per 1000 patients per year, yet costs $200 a month. None of it matters if we only have a $25 copay. Sure, we complain about premiums increasing each year, but no 1 individual has the ability to prevent that increase.

  1. Inflation

  2. Demand subsidized by the State (Medicare, Medicaid, etc)

  3. Regulations and taxes that directly raise costs and give a competitive advantage to larger firms

  4. The FDA, which protects politically connected firms from competition

  5. Import bans on drugs which protect inefficient domestic firms from foreign competition

  6. Medical licensing, which restricts supply of medical professionals

  7. Prohibition on inter-state health insurance, which protects inefficient in-State firms from competition

  8. All manner of grants/subsidies for politically connected firms which support inefficiency

  9. Intellectual property, which keeps the price of drugs and equipment artificially high

…I’m sure there are many others.
