Hi everyone, calling all UK Austrians(and even anyone else nearby) this is an announcement!
A friend of mine, Sam Bowman, at the SOAS in London is forming an Austrian Education Network and reading group in collaboration with the Cobden Centre, for students postgraduate and undergraduate in the UK. Meetings will begin for this group starting this summer and will be held at the Institute for Economic Affairs’ London offices.The main text for the group wil be Murray Rothbard’s Man, Economy and State.

I’ve already received information about this through a friend at York. This is very interesting indeed! Finally I won’t have to travel over an ocean to study Austrian Economics with others.
If you know more about this, I have a couple of questions:
How long are the seminars to last? I’m only in the UK to study, I don’t actually live here, so staying in London for a prolonged period of time would be quite expensive.
Is being ignorant of AE a requirement? Or can one attend even if they’ve been reading around the subject for 2 years now? I haven’t read MES, though I made an attempt, before deciding I ought to read more of Mises first.
I think we’re(notice how I put myself in there already!) looking to help and support other groups, should they want to form in other parts of the country at the different universities e.g. at York where you are, or Birmingham etc. I don’t know how long the seminars or meetings are to be. I don’t think being ignorant of AE is a requirement, I’m certainly not and I think I’ll definitely be attending. Indeed, this might steer my own decision to study graduate economics in London, as opposed to elsewhere.
You’re probably better off asking Sam more detailed questions.
I think the London group is kind of the test group before this can be spread across other parts of the country (since there’s a greater range of networks and contacts associated with the ASI, IEA and Cobden Centre etc), though obviously initiative on the parts of individual students would be helpful. I personally think, the group should be open to more than just university students.
As far as MES goes, I’m in the same boat as I’m still getting through HA, and had to put it on hold to revise for my exams.
