What do Austrians have to say about the act of committing suicide? We all believe in freedom to choose one’s path, but would you allow people to commit suicide with the help of the free market forces? (Lethal injection, hanging, etc), if there’s such service available. Or perhaps selling one’s organs to obtain resources to feed a family, etc.
I personally believe that we should all be responsible for our choices, but then again, you can’t put a price on a human life, now can you?
If you’re against abortion, would you also be against death by choice?
If society reaches that point one day, I don’t think we can go much further when it comes to personal freedom, now can we? Ultimate freedom, opinion?
Most likely, if you’re against abortion, you believe in protecting the life of the unborn child because he/she is not capable of protecting himself/herself. This, once again, gets into the entire debate of:
Whether the ‘unborn’ part indicates there is no right to life directly after conception.
Whether the debate is between the rights of the mother and the child, or between the rights of the father and the mother (i.e. which parent ‘owns’ the unborn child, etc.)
The right to kill yourself whenever you want infers self-ownership, but then you also have to deal with whether the person has children who can’t take care of themselves, etc. and it gets back into the entire dependency vs. self-ownership for the children which is what we were talking about in the ‘abortion’ category.
Depends on what you mean by “price on a human life”. Have you heard of weregild?
Anyways, I consider suicide to be ethically wrong, but morally acceptable. Strictly speaking, it doesn’t cause harm to anyone else (I consider “morality” to cover harm to others) but many other people may be aggrieved by it, etc.
