Dead Space 2 does look interesting, the first one was way too redundant, couldn’t make it all the way to the end. Splinter Cell: Conviction is pretty good, anyone here have it?
Nobody who enjoys Blizzard games? Sure, WoW is a huge timesink (I went to school once, there was too much time to spare…), but Starcraft (and soon SC2) as well as the Diablo games are just great.
I like how threads like this pop up every once in a while.
Favourite games:
JRPGs incl FFVI, FFX, Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest Monsters etc.
Grand Strategies incl Hearts of Iron, Victoria, Europa Universalis, RTW, M2TW etc.
WRPGs incl NWN, Fallout 3, Deus Ex etc.
RTSs incl Total Annihilation, Warcraft 2 etc.
I like a lot of other genres but I’ve never assimilated myself into them to the same degree as the aforementioned ones
in general with regards to games there are more that I have and want to play, or want to get, or have dipped into, rather than fully beaten. There was a few-year gaming hiatus in my life but now it’s one of my main leisure activities, I’m finishing off Fallout 3 at the moment, spend quite a lot of hours on multiplayer COD, giving Dead Space a good go as well. I’m about 10 hours into FFXIII but it’s massively underwhelming. I’m all for story, but not at the expense of gameplay
Gmod is also quite fun.
Try role playing servers, then make your job “Revolutionary”. Even better, set up an illegal gun shop underground and deal out weapons.
Actually, buy a couple “Money Printing Machines”, put them in your house, and make your job something like “Ben Bernanke” or “Federal Reserve Manager”
Having been an avid computer game player since the age of five my interest in them has, to a great extent, tapered off. I think it’s partly because my expectations and tastes don’t conform to the mainstream so there was a diminishing circle of games I thought worth playing, and because I couldn’t justify the time spent playing them anymore (I used to do whole afternoon or night sessions).
I generally stick to RTSs and RPGs (of the hard science, not fantasy variety) nowadays and have been playing Civilisation IV lately. Mass Effect was good, but didn’t quite match the hype that surrounded it. I’ve yet to play the sequel, though.
One of the best games I’ve played was an obscure title by Bethesda called Terminator: Future Shock. It preceded Half-Life and was the first FPS I can remember that really laid on the atmosphere in thick strokes; being alone and hunted by the machines at every turn in a city wasteland at night with no background music was quite something – especially when your only weapon was a lead pipe!
I’ve also always liked the Metal Gear Solid series, especially the third game. MGS4 however, barely lived up to the hype.
Quote:"Does anyone here miss the high-quality games on the Gamecube? I mean even though it didn’t fare wel in sales, those exclusives were just fantastic. Now, it’s really hit or miss with the Wii these days… A ton of crap unfortunately!
Oh boy, Eternal Darkness or Metroid Prime. Where are these damn games Nintendo!?"
An eternal darkness for the Wii would be nice- but as for Metroid…well…

MGS4 wasn’t bad, just a bit westernized and tried to appeal to the fans. The two other new MGS games look like they will be crap. Kojima needs to stop making mgs games. Anyone ever play Zone of the Enders 1 or 2?
MGS4 was a primary example of why people need to listen to outside criticism & pay more attention to editing (MGS was already “westernized” since the first game, because it has always been influenced by western cinema such as Escape from New York, Rambo, etc. Moaning about “japanese purity” does not apply here, since Kojima always let’s his ethnic influences shine in the storyline, especially at the very end (won’t spoil it but it’s after completing the game).
A good many things were not necessary in that game (Otakon crying was completly not-needed, the Naomi sub-plot seemed too long), but the main thing that prevents me from playing it over and over again is technological: the damn thing requires to constantly install the game in parts everytime you play it.
Most player’s could’ve handled changing the disc once versus having to install multiple times (i.e. everyone who played the first MGS on the PS1). A real shame they screwed that up by making the game less acessable whenever I want to play it. The least they could do is give an install permanently option for those who don’t use their hard drives for anything else.
I’m hoping they re-release MGS4 on PS3 at some point (maybe after the PS3 has enjoyed more profitable annuals) and fix some of the issues.
I pre-ordered Alan Wake, Red Dead Redemption, and Halo: Reach the other day.
We should set up like a Spooner, Rothbardian, or a Misesian posse for Xbox Live.
^Yeah that’s true. Kojima loves Western movies. But come on, they changed the confirm button from O to X!
…really though, I didn’t like it how it ended, and your right about a lot of things being unnecessary. I also felt like the game needed a little bit more of backtracking, I don’t know. I have probably played every MGS game over 40 times, easily. I have only replayed MGS4 twice.
^Red Dead Redemption looks amazing. Ever play Call of Juarez?
IGN gave Alan Wake a good review but they say it’s short so I’m thinking of renting instead of buying. Red Dead on the other hand looks like it could easily be played hundreds of hours with all the multiplayer stuff. Definite buy. Plus you get the assassin outfit for pre-ordering.
Does anyone here play MMOs? I know it sounds silly, but I love Champions Online. I played Aion for a little while too but I hated grinding.
Finally got around to playing God of War III. “On Snap!” moments abound.
Nitroadict:“A good many things were not necessary in that game (Otakon crying was completly not-needed”
Otakon cries in every game he’s featured in. I guess its not needed but you know how those kinds of things go.
In MGS1, we actually saw some substantial character relation between Otakon & Sniper Wolf, so him being sad over it is not out of the blue (not to mention Stockholm Syndrome).
In MGS2, his sister dies, so obviously, a relevant response.
In MGS4, we’re supposed to believe that Otakon somehow develops feelings for Naomi (who just so happens to be an expert charmer), suddenlly forgets how she betrayed them (She’s the one that gave Snake FoxDie, and no I don’t care about spoilers), then cries over being manipulated by someone who just reveals they are dying of cancer.
Yeah, the first two make sense, the third one doesn’t.

well Otakon’s generally been a very emotional guy. When he lost Naomi and cried about that- it brought back the same memories of losing Sniper Wolf- he was losing someone he loved all over again. Emotional things like love can blind someone like Otakon completely even if he was betrayed and manipulated- feelings don’t care about logic. He falls very easy for women all the time. He did mess with his step-mom afterall.
Spolier Alert!:
NAOMI! NOOOOOOOOOO! (proceeds to watch rest of cut scene for 15 minutes)
That’s all I have to say about that scene…
Anyone waiting for Peace Walker ? Check out the Japanese commercial for it:

I am, especially since this is what Kojima was originally calling MGS5, more or less. Rising looks like garbage, so far (which isn’t much, but the idea of a vapid venture with Raiden on the 360 doesn’t amuse).
Peacewalkers also takes the final step in closing the storyline full-circle with all other canon MG & MGS games. The only thing I can imagine him doing after Peacewalker are proper, PSP remakes of the first two Metal Gear games.
Kojima needs to get do some new projects, or Zone of the Enders 3. Maybe even Metal Gear Acid 3 (Love the 2nd one). By the way that last link I posted, the owner of the site is an austrian libertarian, good site too for metal gear fans.
While I play games of all genres, I am especially partial to MMORPGs. I feel these are the most immersive games and come with a social, economic, and political depth that’s impossible in other games.
Many of you have probably heard of WoW, but games like EVE Online and the original version of Ultima Online are as close to a stateless society we’ve gotten. They might not be models of peaceful human cooperation, but they do have their economic use.
Take for example the fact that despite no gender, racial, or heredity ‘inequality’ in World of Warcraft, no sickness, or uneven conditions, over 90% of the wealth happens to be in the hands of <10% of the player base. These are generally not the most ‘hardcore’ players either, but rather traders and other individuals who apply innovative thought to wealth accumulation.
And now a shameless plug, I run a small site that covers ‘free to play’ online games, games like WoW that don’t require an upfront purchase or monthly subscription fee. Even most veteran gamers are shocked to learn there are 100s of such games available, spanning every genre from tactical FPSes, to fantasy MMORPGs, to Sci-Fi space-explorers. Check it out if you’re looking for a world to explore:
