just one note on chloe’s comment. wrt paul krugman, he has argued that ww2 ended the great depression, but that isn’t exactly the same thing as saying “war is good for the economy”. i am pretty sure at one point or another he has said it would have been greatly preferrable to have an enormous set of publics works projects to put people to work and stimulate the economy. and he advocated this for reasons similar to other mentioned in the pdf (chieifly that we weren’t sending our nation’s most valuable resource, people, off to be slaughtered).
now, of course, you can argue that public works projects are not good for the economy, but im just pointing out krugman isn’t exactly advocating killing people to solve our economic woes.

I think that’s how I first saw it a while ago, but I assumed it was just his favorite website and not his own. Actually it might be his favorite too, haha. I’ll have to check out the YouTube, though!
Wasn’t ending the depression good for the economy? If war accomplished that, as Krugman says, then so be it. I never said Krugman advocated the war as a means to end the depression. I said, and you agree, that Krugman argues that WW2, once started, ended the depression.
If one accepts the logic of Nielsio’s argument, one must conclude that it would have been impossible for WW2 to end the depression.
I am not saying that Krugman advocates killing people to solve our economic woes. I am saying the Nielsio makes a devastaing argument, using concise terms and examples, and this argument is in conflict with Dr. Krugman’s analysis.

If, as I show, war is bad for the economy, as compared with peace, then ww2 delayed the ending of the depression.
Saying that wwII ended the depression is saying that the war did economic good as compared with peace. This is the equivalent of saying “war is good for the economy”.
You might want to contrast the jet plane better. You’re comparing it to a simple thing like cameras. Pick nanoconductors or something.

The jet plane isn’t contrasted with the cameras. Those things are in different chapters. The jet plane is used in jobs, the cameras in technology.
Suppose they were contrasted, why would that matter? I make a point about aligning R&D with consumer desires. A straw-man that is often created by socialists is to ask “would the market have created X?”. Who is to say we need X?
Cameras are not simple things.
What do you mean with nanoconducters exactly? Google has only 4K results.
I’m speculating that pro-government people will be like “yeah government makes these freaking complicated jets and spaceships. The private sector makes tamogachis, cell phones, and cameras. Lol.”
