Italy? That honestly surprises me. Of all the Western EU members, Italy seemed the least beholden to the unholy trinity of Old Left welfare statism, neoconservatism or multiculturalist thought control. Then again, maybe it’s just my residual instinctive reaction to it’s downgrade by the neocon “Freedom House” propaganda outlet.
This is somewhat of a complex question, since there are a number of ways we can define freedom from a liberal perspective. For general freedom, I’d probably say Hong Kong, Ireland, Switzerland or my own country, New Zealand. Civil liberties is a bit hard to pick, since it all comes down to what particular liberties you prioritise higher (you can smoke dope in the Netherlands but you can’t criticise Muhammad, and vice versa in the US), but I’d probably say New Zealand on balance, especially given it’s dull political climate). For economic liberties, Hong Kong, Singapore and many of the smaller, more independent European islands and micronations like Andorra, Malta, Monaco and Montenegro, though I’ve also heard good things about Estonia and many of the Baltic countries, and even Nauru (the only big tax there is airport excise, since the government makes most of it’s small revenues through an industry involving bird droppings).
Italy has always been plagued by socialism.. and joining the EuroZone obviously didn’t improved our situation.
Taxes and regulations are so high that life is hell for most of us; I’m so sick of wasting money into taxes and time/energy into red tape that I’m planning to emigrate even if my degree could be useless.
how does one get to stay in another country past the 90 days of the visa?
Different countires have different requirements but most of them have study and work visas that you can apply for, but the work has to be highly skilled. For people 16-30 or something like that, you can get an au pair visa which lasts for a year. I found out recently that Mynamar (Burma) lets you stay as long as you want for a dollar a day. In Hong Kong or Thailand or some Asian country, you only have to leave for a day before you can renew your visa, so people do that. It’s all pretty complicated and very specific to country. Australia has a work/holiday visa for a year for Americans.
It takes a hell of a lot of studying to figure it all out so it has to be more how can a person from this country stay in that country who has this much money, knows these people, or has these skills.
