When I was in elementry school, the main environmental talk was about the ozone layer. Is this a subject even brought up anymore?
As far as I know the monolithic chemical companies got the government to outlaw their CFCs before the patents they had on them expired and developing countries could under-sell them.
Now they have a ton of patents out on new and improved “Ozone-friendly” CFCs so they can maintain their respective government-assisted monopolies.

When I was taking my Organic Chemistry courses back in the days it was the matter for quite a few jokes. The main reason was the patent on Freon was about to expire in the US, India and a few other places. Of course DuPont could have renewed it but it would have cost hundreds of millions (in '80s money). So instead they backed the Montreal Treaty, did public penance for “producing a chemical harmful to our ozone layer” and trotted out the HCF1134a, a new cryogenic gas which was of course “completely safe for our ozone layer”. Just look at the figures: back in 1984 DuPont supplied 90% of the coolant gases used in the automotive sector. Right now is 100%.
Then there are still some useful idiots who believe “Global Warming deniers” are “oil company shills”… [:D]

Lewis du Pont Smith said in a letter to shareholders that this was “the most massive consumer fraud of this century”.
He did give tons of money to the LaRouche movement and was declared mentally unfit to manage his affairs prior to this statement, but I don’t think he’s far out of the ballpark in any case…
Now we have the anthropogenic climate change fraud which makes the CFC debacle look like a penny-pincher’s Ponzi scheme.
