I don’t seem to understand why this government, the MA government, and so many other governments that impose universal health care require their citizens to purchase health care insurance?
What’s the reason behind?

I guess it is some people’s interests to have people forced into the insurance market. Its one more way to keep prophits high without having to put more effort for it.
I’m not sure why you have to make a benefit mandatory either, but I suppose it’s just another aspect of the nanny state.
Plus, if you allow competition to your universal mandatory system, there’s a chance that it will be embarassed by private sector insurance. And we wouldn’t want that to happen.
Edit: Oh, I think I misunderstood you. The poster above me seems to be more correct, then.
A universal system is just a pyramid scheme. They need to leech off the healthy and productive in order to subsidize the costs to the less healthy and less productive. This creates the illusion of equality with everyone paying the same amount when, in reality, some people will be getting full use of the system while others will and do not.
Because it’s not insurance. It’s welfare, and the way welfare works is that one group of people parasitically expoloits another group of people.
Because they can’t have people opting out of it, that would be a problem for obvious reasons.
