Will society/civilization collapse? (survivalism, gold, primitivism)

I have a feeling that there may be a societal collapse sometime in the near future. I don’t just mean the American dollar being devalued to the point of toilet paper but a full-blown collapse. Knowing how the FED keeps destroying liberty and seeing things like the food crisis and overpopulation I’m sure something will happen.

I’m thinking about going the way of survivalism: stacking up on guns and gold (or silver) and homesteading in New Hampshire. That way I can survive and avoid the collapse.

This guy does an excellent job explaining the loss of liberty in America if you haven’t seen this before: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Od4KWLcF_Co

Careful, that’s the lie the post-national state is going to use to justify mass genocide.

OK but there’s many other factors in this. I keep feeling that civilization is at the point where it’s bound to implode. Plus the FED is poisoning us.

I live in Idiana and am realistically expecting serious police state style goings on when something bad does happen. I don’t thnik there will be an utopia that is able to escape it. Any state that stands up for itself will feel the force of the federal government.

They will also tell you that anyone who is warning of this is a terrorist.

You can never be sure, but i have been buying physical silver and some non GMO seeds from mountainroseherbs. I got class, but ill post later.

Survivalism and “homesteading” in some personal compound in the hills is potentially a really bad idea if things go to hell. You’re a huge target. People know you probably have a bunch of weapons, food, other stuff, etc. It won’t matter how many rifles or cans of beans you have if a crew of five guys show up when you’re sleeping.

From what I’ve read, and looking at historical examples, the best bet is to just find a community of people that you can trust, and get to know them. Small towns and nieghborhoods are good for that. Civilization has historically been the safest place to live for a reason. It’s one thing to rob some dude living off by his own in the wilderness with a bunch of stuff. It’s a high value target with little risk. It’s another to break into someone’s home in a town when you know that every window might have a set of eyes behind it.

I forget where it is exactly, but there’s a few articles from a man from Argentina describing the economic collapse that happend there, and how he got through it. Basically, he said what I outlined above, and also made the point that rifles and long-arms aren’t very useful outside your home, because you can’t carry them easily. Even when shit hits the fan, it’s not really acceptable to be walking somewhere with an arsenal on your back. Things must get REALLY bad before that becomes the norm. People will think you’re a threat and/or crazy. The bottom line, get to know your pistol.

Really, you can go off on all sorts of survivalist fantasies, but it will be better to prepare mentally rather than materially. You can’t stockpile enough food, having huge amounts of physical PMs lying around is a huge liability, etc. You’ll be saved by your wits and your neighbors.

“The bottom line, get to know your pistol.” haha how true. get a few.

Mental preparation is the hardest part anyway. That is what i am trying to do for the people around me now. I told my parents and friends about Bee Pollen and Maitake, Shitake, and Reishi Mushroooms. Get bulk teas and things. You’ll always be able to deal with other people, but if they aren’t aware of WHY it all happens then they will be useless and it would be better to avoid them. My guess is in the U.S. the riots will be non-sensical. People will loot Best Buy before they loot the farmers market because people are so stupid here. At least in the EU they know it is the banks and government. Over here we think its the ‘free market’.

I’d also get some posters of the constitution to throw up inside to remind the marines when they are rooting through your apartment looking for those pistols.

Bullshi*t. That’s why you use your gold to hire a private defense force to protect your property from intruders.

I was two when my society collapsed, and I can say that it’s not such a big deal after all. At most there would be mass emigration (if indeed a collapse is coming, but I highly doubt it for the US), but otherwise things will get back in place pretty soon, and the state might even retreat by much as a result. Survivalists are silly.

I also don’t think that the US government is about to suddenly become much less powerful and influencial, especially not domestically. I’d be much more concerned about it becoming more powerful and completely totalitarian in the medium-term. I don’t think you’re going to be fending off mobs of disenfranchised, I think you’re going to be facing the military and federal police, and a bunker in the hills doesn’t work very well against that lot, sadly.

  • Bullshi*t. That’s why you use your gold to hire a private defense force to protect your property from intruders.

Firstly, I wouldn’t bet on there being honest, effective PDAs in the months or years immediately following a collapse. The State isn’t just going to go “poof” and suddently free-market utopia will spring up from the ground. The government would probaby still be around, retaining it’s claims on the monopoly of force.

Second, if you’re betting on hiring a PDA, posse, or whatever, what’s the point of living up in the hills then anyway? It’ll cost more to have them up there, your supply lines will be longer and more vunerable, and, as I said before, you’re isolated. If you’re worried about riots in major cities and whatnot, I don’t blame you. But there’s many degrees of civilization between huge metropolitan areas and “running to the hills”.

Isolated survivalism is rooted in fantasy, in my opinion, and dangerously so.

How would the state regain its power when infrastructure has collapsed and its fiat currency is worthless?

Survivalism is a great way for freedom. Living by yourself with no neighbors living off the land like humans did 10,000 years ago w/o the state is the freest way of living I can think of.

Why would it cost them more?

Because they have the guns, silly. I mean, there are many states that have stood through economic collapse. It might not be the same state, but hoping for the state to just vanish is fantasy. The majority of the population wants some kind of government, and there will be plenty of people from the former state apperatus willing to give it to them. Think about it, just a decade after the French Revolution, you have Napoleon. Robert Mugabe is still in power even though he threw his nations currency into hyperinflation. Argentina went through a economic collapse, and they had a bunch of Presidents resign, but the State never fell.

“The way humans lived 10,000 years ago” was in small communities, either nomadic herders or settled farmers, not solitary families off on thier own. They were very connected to thier neighbors, not isolated from them.

  • Why would it cost them more?

This should be simple to see. They’re off up in the hills, away from any other trading hubs, production areas, etc. You need to pay for fuel, food, lodging, travel time… The men will likely wish to be paid more because they’re stuck in some bumfuck homestead in the sticks. Getting supplies to you would be riskier and your security will likely want to be paid more to hedge against that. Vehicle maintainence, etc. Have you ever been involved in a project where you’re working in remote areas? Even just very rural ones? The costs go up quickly.

I don’t mean to shit all over your dreams or anything, but like I said, the secure survivalist compound, meant to weather the storm of social revolution, is a weird fantasy. The reality would be very different. And this is coming from someone who grew up in a rural area, knows farming, and has wilderness surival experience. Some people just living alone, or primitively. That’s fine, I’ve got no beef with that. But thinking that it’s the best way to protect yourself during an economic collapse? Not so much.

Taking up a hunter-gatherer/survivalist lifestyle is the perfect way to handle a sudden collapse. Primitive survival skills ALWAYS come in handy no matter what the situation. Gold and silver are a must as well.

Think of it this way: agriculture relies on all sorts of state subsidies, right? If/when the state collapses agriculture industries will go haywire and we’ll have to become self-sufficient in food if we want to survive. Also take into account that you don’t know what the FDA is approving. There’s all sorts of poison in our food (preservatives), poison in pharmaceuticals and poison in tap water. Once you live a natural lifestyle not only are you a complete individualist but your diet is 100% natural. The same thing goes for medicine: take marijuana with you as a universal cure.

After the collapse people like you are going to be the first to die. The ones running into the woods with no clue about what they’re doing. The first thing people should do is stay and connect with their neighbors and friends and work to help one another. Not run around like chickens with their heads cut off.

Ummmm… what?

Humans always “have a feeling that there may be a societal collapse sometime in the near future”, it’s in our genes.

The first thing people should do is stay and connect with their neighbors and friends and work to help one another.

So you would advocate collectivism?

you know, if society collapses i would like to have a few confidantes that aren’t going to drop to thier knees when the authorities come knocking.

My guess is that “societal collapse” means that law enforcement will most likely revert just doing things because they have the badges. Not to mention the threat of martial law in cities where things won’t get distributed to.

If there is a resistance like in hahah Half-Life 2 or something. I’ll be there.

@Freedom4… there is a difference between collectivism and cooperation, Ayn.
