Capitalism Is Amazing

I’m getting sick of seeing so many pessimistic threads…or maybe it’s because I usually end up scoping out pessimistic things. Either way, in this thread, we post things that capitalism has done that are friggin’ amazing. They don’t have to be huge scoping grandious achievements (though those help), I’m mainly going to start off telling simpler stories.

-I had noticed that cutting up apples by hand was rather tedious for myself. I usually make things that require 5-10 minutes of peeling or so. I’m not saying it’s horrible, but it’d be a nice luxury if there was a better way to do it. I went to the grocery store with this thought in mind. There was one of those push-apple cutters, that cost less than the bag of apples. I was impressed, I love the thing.

-Human Action is now $10.

-I’m not starving, food is amazing and relatively cheap. I swear one day I just threw a bunch of change and possibly some pocket lint on the counter and the clerk shrugged and said that that looked like enough. (I’m exaggerating for the sake of humor here :wink: )

-I don’t exactly look forward to the cold of winter. However, only recently I heard of the invention of long-johns, I got them ridiculously cheap. I now walk around outside in complete comfort, amazing invention.

-While we’re talking about winter, thick thick thick leather gloves at a second-hand store for cheap. Awesome as well.

-A longer while back, I got a flat tire. Wal-mart apparently has a car center. I got a new tire, fixed it, balanced, full load of groceries, other necessities, under $100. Drove home in less than in hour. Awesomeawesomeawesome.

-I have three large, full bookshelves in my apartment.

-Speaking of my apartment, when I come home, it’s warm.

-Electricity is cheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeap.

-In Summer, there is air conditioning. HOLY CRAP, AIR CONDITIONERS, THANK THE MAN WHO INVENTED THAT.

I am a TA, not a large salary, life is pretty amazing.

Reading back on this, it seems like a large portion of my happiness is derived from how warm I am :P.

I guess I’ll list the great things Capitilism has brought me as well:

-Pizza rolls: imo the ultimate proof of the superority of Capitilism over central planning. After all, how could any central planner have thought up those little pieces of delicious-ness

-My PS3, its like an all-in-one entertainment center.

-The fact that I can make a living doing things I actually enjoy.

-Meat: for most of history meat was a luxury eaten by the super-rich or on special occasions. Now I can get hamburger and pork chops cheap at my local super market, and all the spices I need to cook them properly as well(or tomato juice to boil the chops in, as I rarely cook outside this time of year)

-If I dont feel like cooking, I dont have to. I just hop over the Taco Bell or a local chinese place, and dinner is served.

-Coffee, enough said…

-and last, but certainly not least, the fact that I’m able to put this list out for everybody to read…

-I was squeaking about Wal-Mart with my buggy full of all the food I’ll need for a quite a while when out of the corner of my eye I saw something magical: Oreos covered in white fudge. I immediately bought a box. Holy cow, they were DELICIOUS.

-Speaking of fudge (What? I really like fudge, ok?) my Mother, considering it’s exam time, sent me a box of around six pounds of fudge, shipped all the way from North Carolina. Relatively cheap, too, and very high quality.

-I live in a rather old and dilapidated mobile home and last winter my heater broke down. I was freezing my butt off until I bought an electric heater for a really small price at Wal-Mart. Kept me warm until my heater could be fixed.

-I owe the fact that I’m a writer to a certain MMO called Runescape. Way back in high school, I played the game a lot and went onto their forums, then eventually decided to write my own fanfiction set in the world but using my own characters. Without capitalism, I doubt I would have discovered one of my favorite things to do.

-My really old cat, who I’ve had since I was a small child, had liver failure recently. He’s too old to make anything like surgery an option, but we’ve been feeding him some specially engineered food with all of the vitamins and such he needs. He’s still really thin, but he’s making a comeback thanks to that cat food. A couple of months later and he’s still here in my lap.

-It only costs about $400-$600 dollars to get a REALLY nice desktop last I checked (though the one I found was a rather good deal). And I mean REALLY nice, with all the bells and whistles.

-Video games, how I love thee. And you wouldn’t be possible without capitalism.
