I am invited tot he premiere of this movie tonight. Don’t know if I have time to go or not yet but if the trailer is of any indication then it is going to be a headache.
Heres my problem, this organic foods industry isn’t some grass roots movement to turn the tides against evil corporations… it seems to me that healthier and safer food is a free market solution to the problems of bad unhealthy food available (assuming its as bad as the film will portray it to be). The alarm bells went off him my head when the guy at the end said “imagine if it was a national policy to have this nutritious healtheir food”… The solution to there problem seems to comes from the greedy incentives they will surely bash in the film.
Maybe I will go see it and report back here. There is actually gonna be a q&a with the director afterwards and I would love some ammunition if anyone has a suggestion.
Organic food is the original food. It is good. This doesn’t necessarily mean inorganic food is bad. The government getting involved in this free market process - that’s bad. That whole movie even showed explicitly that “they” the industrialist food producers have had government power backing their efforts and now the organic food producers that are advocating a national policy on this are playing the government game.
It’s called King of the HIll. Who ever is on top wins and pushes everybody else down until somebody can rise take governmental power and push everybody else down for awhile.
Since the definition of “organic food” is really obscure, we can safely assume that this issue has been tainted by the pinko commies/socialists/Marxists/statists/whatever. Biologically speaking, anything organic is anythic that is carbon-based. Thus, oil is organic beceause it is carbon-based. But then we get to pinko commies/socialists/Marxists/statists/whatever definitions. One definition may be “‘locally’ grown food”. Another may be “food not grown with fertilizer/‘chemicals’”. So the problem with this issue is that we must agree on a definition. However, I doubt that the documentary will give a clear definition for “organic”; thus, we can be sure that much debate will arise, and nothing will get solved.
Can’t view the link at my current location, but I had an immediate reaction to this: Oh, heck no they aren’t touching my cheeseburgers! [:P] (Although it could get better if they were organic, I don’t want big gov involved in the slightest. I also don’t want to pay $20 for it either.)
But more seriously: If “they” start regulating the type of food we can eat, what’s stopping the government from going the next step and dictating the actual food we can eat itself? Are bans on red meat and Big Macs “for the good of public health” and to make health care less costly in our future? How far is this going to go? This is insanity. If people really want organic food, the market will demonstrate this without wasteful and costly regulation!
Organic is a government defined food. It is black and white. No preservatives and no artificial flavors. No chemicals are applied to them (chemicals that are not food, cause, there are chemicals used that are food based, the non-food based are poison to the human body if ingested directly and a person would die, thus, not food).
The problem is and has been that the government intervenes, even on the very definition of what “organic” means. But it’s an old concept. Chemicals and preservatives, etc… are a new social engineering feat.
“Green jobs” is defined by the government. “Marriage” is defined by the government. “Safe food” is defined by the government. The government always makes things worse, but I was trying to make the point that the movie will probably obscure what “organic” is; or, at least it will be obscured in the debates that will follow it. The same happens with the definition for “inflation”. You can’t debate someone successfully unless both parties agree upon the definitions. And like I was saying, many definitions for “organic” are used in this debate over food and stuff. Even “green jobs”. I went to this exhibit at school about how to save Earth from ourselves. I remember several groups defining “green”, “sustainable”, and “renewable” differently (; they also made a lot of “appeals to authority”, “appeals to pity”, and other fallacies).
With regard to the trailer: value is subjective. If people choose to eat so-called crappy food, why not let them? This whole debate boils down to the collectivists wanting to control everyone else. Also, they never attack the system; that is, the state. The want to give the state (FDA) more power even though it is the state that does the dirty work for the lobbies. Go figure!
Agreed. And as you say as long as the government is defining “organic” their next step can easily boil over to what businesses need to have. Natural foods was a rave not too long ago. Now there is restrictions and definitions on what is considered “natural” and “organic”. They are different. The natural foods dashed in more government regulations on food ingredient labeling. It’s these actual definitions, labels, more writing on the container, more overhead on the businesses. I’m sure it gets costly just to jump through these hoops.
It might be easier to go to a local farm talk to the farmer on what he applies to his foods and then shop that way. No need for costly containers, government overhead, etc, etc, making it so expense.[:)]
This movie looks like typical progressive propaganda. The problem with the food industry is government subsidies. The food itself is fine, organic is simply propaganda from expensive and unsustainable.
Poptech there is nothing difficult about organic food you put the seed in the earth and the food grows. It’s been around for thousands of years. If there is profit to be made on the free market from organic food so be it. It’s not the plague. If you want poisonous chemicals (labels read: Do not ingest or call poison control if you do) and additives in your food then so be it. I eat those too. This is really not a big deal. Organic foods have always been on this earth for thousands upon thousands of years. I don’t see how that is bullshit. sigh
The right of the food producers to produce what they want and how they want. The people in the trailer want to give the FDA greater power over the food industry. That capacity.
I’m not talking about food packaging. I never said that. Haven’t you ever been on a farm? The fertilizers are not to be ingested directly. Anybody knows that. Organic food is simply putting a seed in the earth and wholla - a corn stalk grows. That’s as old as people doing any kind of agriculture.
I would guess he means the right of an entrepeneur to produce and offer his product on the market and see if there is profit in it or if he will need to take his lumps as losses hit. i.e. that there should not be a law in place prohibiting food that government people decide the population at large dont want or shouldnt want.
