In a free society, how could people deal with the the ground zero mosque controversy? That is, how can the opposition prevent the mosque from getting built or vice versa?
People who don’t want the mosque to be built could buy the property from the people who are trying to build the mosque.
To stop it: organize a boycott of the mosque. not buy or sell to people who go in and out of it. publicize the names of the mosqueovites and ask everyone, neighbors of their homes as well, not to do any business with them. after all it’s everyones right to buy and sell to whom they wish. If enough people cared, the place would probably have to close.
To open it: if it’s their land they can do as they wish. help break the boycott mentioned above if they can.
Or just get over yourselves and stop trying to stop people from expressing themselves?
Besides, in a free society, the likelihood of us perpetually sticking our grubby lil hands in their oil would be nil (from a military/conquest perspective) and 9/11 would never have happened at all.

Our ideas of what constitutes a “free society” may differ, but in what I would consider a “free society”, people are free. The opposition could attempt to foil the mosque by any means available. Protest, organize labor resistance, vandalization, fire bombing, murder, etc.
The same holds true of the supporters.
Now, as for how would they react in absence of the state, is rather hard to say. Current events would be so radically different it is difficult to even juxtapose the current controversy into that hypothetical reality.
