To me, if everyone was so worried about the mosque being built in New York, instead of, and the Austrain answer to the problem, would be to pay the owners of the building not to build there and build elsewhere, instead of having the gov’t step in, correct?

To me, it doesn’t really matter, but it seems that many, or at least some very vocal people, are objecting to it and calling for the sweet gov’t to protect them from the Big, Bad Mosque builders [/sarsam and little red riding hood reference]

Reading the article what amazed me was Obama stood up for private property, though in this case probably for the wrong reasons.
He didn’t stand up for private property. He stood up for muslims.
If I may be so crass, someone has already responded to the problem - by suggesting to create a gay bar next to the Ground Zero mosque. And not just any bar, but one that specifically also invites gay Muslims, to promote tolarance and cater to a persecuted minority.

Haha, hilarious. I’m an atheist ancap that does have a beef with Islam, I think exposing them to freedom will yield the best results. Gay bars near mosques is an excellent idea!
Just goes to show how chauvinistic America can be. Supposedly places in the rest of the world have their “ancient tribal hatreds” that the non-hateful Americans can simply not comprehend. But in reality Americans periodically pick someone to hate for a while almost on a whim - the Krauts, the Japs, the Russkies, the Muslims… And that is what is really noteable about this. American hatreds are built on the flimsiest of excuses. What did the Moslems ever do to Americans for this hatred to arise? Nothing. It is not like America just liberated itself from 400 years of Muslim rule or something to make this sort of bigotry somewhat understandable.
Conflict with the Japanese, Germans, and Russians was not for no reason. It was also mutual.
And of course Muslims carried out the attacks on 9/11.
Not saying everyone should be blamed or pulled into a conflict. But you did use the overgeneralization that ‘Americans are chauvinistic’.

John Ess, those were educated, urban young men with a secular upbringing who did 9/11. Their involvement was one of strictly political purpose. Atta’s parents didn’t care much for faith, and Jarrah’s parents brought him up in a totally non-religious manner.
Deeply religious rural Muslims have neither the financial resources, nor the skill or training, nor the time commitment to handle such a complex operation.

Um… he said he has a beef with Islam, as in the religion, not the practitioners of said religion. I agree with him. The Quran clearly teaches violence against infidels. It is a religion of intolerance and violence. HOWEVER, that is not saying that Muslims are all intolerant and violent. Just like Christians, many ignore some of the teachings of their own religion because they realize that they live in a modern society with other people. You can hate the religion’s teachings while still supporting its practitioners right to worship freely.

And if that is enough to make this level of chauvinism expected, then what level of hatred would we have to expect from the Muslims if they were like the Americans?

I know what you meant, and I knew somebody would bring up 9/11 as I was writitng my first post. But what I was saying was other peoples mainly have somekind of half-legitimate reasons for their hatreds. Not so the Americans who turn their hatreds on and off as they are told by their elites. There was somekind of anti-German campaign in the US during the Great War. Not so an anti-American campaign in Germany, albeit the Germans probably had more reason to hate the Americans than vice versa.
I wouldn’t care about this really, but for the likes of American CNN journalists who feint total shock when met with some kind of hatreds, when in reality the US is as suceptible to them as any other place - if not more when you take into account that the Americans have probably the least “reason” to hate any outsiders.

Actually no the Quran doesn’t teach violence against disbelievers simply for being disbelievers. It teaches self-defense against oppression and to fight for justice- and to quickly make peace with whoever makes peace with you. It isn’t a religion of intolerance or violence you’re reading it terribly wrong(now if you’re not going by Quran and using “Sharia” law from various countries around the world as the basis for your statement, then you’re right). Muslims who wish for violence against others are quickly separating themselves from Islam not embracing it. You can easily be a muslim and live in modern society because Quran doesn’t teach you to go kill your neighbor for not believing in God.
