In modern parlance ‘anti-semite’ means ‘anti-Jew’, which is inaccurate on two fronts because not all (most?) Jews are very semitic (if at all) and the vast majority of semites are not Jews. But man, it sure would be funny to hear some guy railing on about how the Akkadians secretly control the media and the Samaritans are behind a conspiracy to exterminate the White Race.

I’ve noticed a couple people who pop up every now and again and seem to be very coy at actually being anti-semetic the way you are talking. That is they seem to only like “Nordic” types or something like that and don’t like those Mediterranian types. They may be anti-slav too for all I know. Either way I usually associate these types of people as people who wish wield battle axes, screw around with runes, wear a loin cloth, and read Evola.
But the words are what they are due to grand wizard Hitler being a pop culture phenom, mixed with idiotic 19th century Germanic intellectual trustifarian types busy trying to one up each other at Hippel’s and botching history. Still though it is odd that I had to recalibrate my brain to figure out what people were actually saying when they used words like Semite and Aryan, which are not the way I was used to those words being used.

Yeah, the first thing I think of when I hear ‘aryan’ is to prosume it’s a mispronunciation of ‘Arian’, which makes me think of central Asian horsemen, or maybe Farsis or Vedics. Unless I am actually in the context of WW2 propaganda the pop Aryan (i.e., Nord) never occurs to me. My mental image of an ‘Aryan’ probably looks more like Prateek than David Duke. The same goes for semite, I associate ‘semitic’ with language more than ethnicity.

Ricky, you’re absolutely wrong about the meaning of anti-semite. It was first used in the 19th century to refer specifically to the hatred of Jews - it was never used to mean hatred of all semitic peoples.

Which makes the word retarded. If anti-black simply means an American black who isn’t an African immigrant, Jamacian, etc it is probably a dumb word.
How can a word be wrong or right? Language is about negotiated meaning. No more, no less. Grumpy old farts who spend their time getting into etymological hissy fits need to get a grip.
If someone uses the word “irregardless” it makes them look like a fool, sure the word has a meaning, I guess but it is an uneeded stab at sounding pretentious. When people start making up uneeded Greek and Latin words, when they have little idea as to how the words actually function to give their words a loftier air of gravity, or when Fascism simply means “stuff I don’t like” and democracy means “good” that’s fine I guess. I mean in a practicle situation you take what you can work with, but this isn’t a practicle situation and I am just calling a spade a spade.
If someone is anti-Jewish try to force them to say it. Don’t let anyone try to play coy and hide behind pseudo-intellectual words to state what it is they are trying to get at.
What a horrible example. Ever heard of Hamburg? Hamburger just means ‘from Hamburg’ or ‘related to Hamburg’, ‘deriving from Hamburg’ etc. Seriously, how do people not know this?
Hamburg itself is named for Hamma Castle, which probably means ‘on the river bend’.
Also, ‘semite’ means in every other context and usage in English or any other language semitic peoples or speakers of a semitic language.
This is not like ‘parkway’, which sounds weird but makes perfect sense (it’s got a landscaped median, ergo a park way); this is a misuse of the word ‘semite’.
Anti-Jewish and Anti-Semite are not the same thing. One refers to religion and the other refers to ethnicity. And because Anti-Jewish and Anti-Israel are not the same thing it would get confusing if Anti-Semite were change to Anti-Israelite. Especially because not all Jews live in Israel.
