Is it morally okay to join the military?

I was talking about his participation in the Vietnam war. Or I could also mention his support for American intervention on WWII - he was pretty clear about it in an interview done by Stossel.

Frankly I don’t much care about Paul, but Poptech probably thinks that by invoking Paul he makes some sort of point because nobody would be ‘clueless’ enough to say anything bad about Paul…Well, Poptech couldn’t be more wrong.

Classic insanity…

Juan - “Ron Paul is an enabler of murder”

See what I mean Spidey ?

Juan, is Ron Paul an enabler of murder?

Now you can’t read ?

Are you willing to kill someone for those benefits?

Juan, is Ron Paul an enabler of murder? I need you to clarify.

I have no problem killing enemies of the United States. I’ve outlined my ethical problems problems already.

Join the Air Force. You’re never going to deploy. You’re going to sit at a desk and steal taxpayer money that was stolen anyways. If you’re going to be homeless then I don’t think you should be questioning this on your libertarian principles.

Or, should I castigate myself for going to a public school? Or using a public road? Using USPS?

Well who decides who is an enemy of the US?

Ron Paul wasn’t a libertarian when he was in the armed forces, and I believe he has stated he probably wouldn’t have gone in knowing what he knows now.

Anyway, this is an appeal to authority of some sort. If you go into the military, you must be ready to kill. If you are ready to kill, then you are a potential murdererer. If you do kill, you are a murderer. That is a pretty simple logical progression.

obviously it depends on what Ron P. thought at the time. if he saw dead bodies or injured people I’m not sure he thought let’s heal 'em up so they can come right back in here to do patch work again. maybe some doctors do and others just want to heal up the wounds and keep as many people alive considering the circumstances.

A doctor isn’t a solider. There are obvious boundaries of definition here.

So if I am hungry, it is ok to rob someone for money?

You’re not a libertarian then. Good luck with your decision.

I’m just saying that hypothetically, if the United States were involved in a legitimate war, I would generally be okay with killing another person if those were my orders. I think many if not most libertarians would too. If I could push a button and make those who have killed U.S. troops in Iraq or Afghanistan die, I would. These things are irrelevant, however.

You’re not a libertarian if you don’t believe the government has a legimate role in using foreign policy to protect its citizens, even if that means going to war.

I don’t buy that. It’s stolen property. If we forget that, then we have no conception of justice.

When you start paying in to the system, your opinion on this will change. The “starve the best” theory is usually put forth to validate people who already take out more than they put in.

Governments collapse when they lose the consent of their constituencies. Tyrannical governments have special interests as constituencies. You can’t bankrupt America, all you can do is put more pressure on other Americans by taking resources from a pool of stolen goods, in lieu of your own production.

honestly, i don’t know if i can be critical or not.

There is no such thing as a legitimate war. You might mean a war of self-defense. America has never fought in one of those.

Has it occurred to you that US troops have died in Iraq and Afghanistan because they are trespassers and invaders?

Ok, when has the US gone to war to protect its citizens?
