UFC threatens to go after online PPV pirates

The Ultimate Fighting Championship wants to shut down free online streams of its pay-per-view broadcasts.

“It’s going to be a battle, but I’m ready to … fight,” UFC President Dana White told The Vancouver Sun. “We’re gonna go after them, we’re gonna go after them hard, and we’re gonna hurt 'em.”

The Sun makes note of UFC’s recent assertion that it discovered 271 illegal video streams with more than 140,000 viewers of UFC 106, which generated an estimated 330,000 to 500,000 PPV buys. UFC’s top officials view the pirate watchers as potential lost revenue.

“We’re gonna make it where it’s not worth it to put UFC events up on the website,” White told The Sun.

One of the men who regularly appears on those pay-per-view broadcasts begs to differ. UFC commentator Joe Rogan, who has never been shy about expressing views that could be described as libertarian, argues that the anti-piracy battle is fruitless. Rogan told the Sun that people who want to buy the PPV shows will do so regardless of pirate streams online:

“I like things being out there. I think people are always going to buy UFC pay-per-views. You’re going to get a much better experience watching it on your television than all stretched out looking fuzzy and pixilated.”

Rogan’s argument harkens back to the early days of radio and baseball. Team owners initially feared free live broadcasts would cut into ticket sales. Given that it didn’t happen to baseball then, it’s worth asking whether it would happen to UFC now.

Except they shouldn’t & have no right to it at all, not one iota.

Those viewers would not purchase the product at their price, it’s not a lost sale.

Maybe they should considering lowering their prices… there is obviously demand - just not at extortion rates.

That relies on the pirate streams being inferior to the official stream in quality. Without IP, they would be literally identical.

pfft loss of revenue. UFC is losing popularity because no one wants to see 2 guys grapple, wrestling is boring. People wanna see face punches.

To be fair, UFC is all about using violence and people hurting each other. And not reason.

It would hardly follow that they’d wish for non-violent solutions to problems.

I wanna see ninja kicks and vicious knockouts, not muscular men hugging each other on the floor while wearing spandex undies. That’s just my personal preference.
