But the robber on the street spends it on himself; taxation is sued to pay for social welfare - you know, people who would stare to death without government intervention, and indeed to pay for the police who are protecting you at this very moment. You may disagree with some of their actions, but you cannot reasonably object to their existence. (Ivor - we are dealing with an extremist anacho-capitalist, hence the seeming lack of logic in his sentiments)

Which is why it is nice, and polite and hopeful to believe these people can be educated and turned away from socialism, the reality is, they are probably too stupid and useless to be worth the effort.

Before I was a minarchist, I was never that stupid. I don’t think I was that stupid when I was an infant. And there are billions of these sorts of people.

You’re right - the Convention for Modern Liberty [or whatever it’s called] is where I had hoped to find some susceptible types. The socialist groups are strictly for fun - although if I managed to move them even slightly towards freedom I would be happy. Many socialist do tend to freedom, they just erroneously think that only a collectivist state, redistribution, nationalisation etc can lead to freedom.

Show them the error of their ways and they could be very useful.

I myself was a socialist, literally, for about a year when i was 14 (weren’t we all?), and then progressed slowly towards free markets, gradually getting rid of all my socialistic tendencies. Like many of you I’m sure, it took a while before I was prepared to accept anarcho-capitalism as anything more than a utopian fantasy. When I finally read some of the literature on private defence etc, and took my premises to their logical conclusions, I came out as I am now.

mr stratton; you appear to be suggesting that I am a socialist, and whilst I suppose that, given the average political leaning of people here, I am a relative socialist, I personally feel that there is a difference between income redistribtution for the purpose of absolute poverty reduction, and being a socialist. Our mutual friend, “the desolate one”, classes me as a minarchist, if that is any way of clearing this up.

check your facts before slinging nasty accusation like that around boyo; don’t make me infringe your rights…

Well, minarchist might be a bit far. But you do seem to favour markets over government in general.

And that is the thing. Anyone who grows up and still believes in socialism is hopeless. Even as a Mormon, as a teenager, and being taught that during the thousand year reign of God that no one would own property, I thought the idea was far-fetched. I thought to myself, why would anyone work?

Socialists deny human nature. As such, they deny reality.

now, beyond the remediation of absolute poverty, and the provision of lighthouses, and similar goods, I believe that the state has no role. but once everyone has enough to not die, the free market should take over.

What’s not to understand? You’re a socialist. So Mises, but you believe in socialization of charity too, which is far worse than Mises advocacy of state provided “defense”.
