I happen to be a huge fan off Jazz hip-hop
Also a fan of standards stuff (Sinatra, Bobby Darin’s swing releases, and the like).
1.) Mellow alternative bands (Minus the Bear, Maps and Atlases) Fast-paced intense jazz (Jim Robitaille Group, etc) and classic rock (Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd), mostly
2.) I’ve played 2 shows with some bands this week so I’ve been listening to underground demo cd’s
3.) “Maps” by Scarlet
It looks like there a lot of Prog rock fans on this board. Any suggestions where a naive could get started listening to that? I have always heard good things, but never really knew what to pick up.
I’m a massive hip hop fan, and have limited interests in dubstep, drum ‘n’ bass, different forms of music, soundtracks and country.

I listen to all kinds of weird stuff, ranging from Arab Islamic songs, to traditional Yugoslavian folk music, to rap, techno, Johnny Cash, rock (system of a down), whatever. As long as it sounds good.

I dunno. I can’t imagine anyone grabbing me the way Rush did when I first heard ‘Xanadu’, even if it was 15 years after it was recorded. And the only thing I know about ELP is that they threatened to sue Purple after the California Jam in 1974 becoz they didn’t fancy their chances coming on after Blackmore nearly blew himself & Ian Paice up at the end.
Tom Jones is coming to Oz next month - now that’s a bloke that can sing…still, he’s Welsh, what do we expect?

Yeah, I’ll give you the Tull, Thick as a brick is a classic. Can is sort of esoteric, I was aiming for just a bare bones, beginner’s guide to prog. Believe me, I barely even listen to these albums anymore.
I will be cold in the ground before I recommend Dream Theater to anyone, under any circumstances.
Meh. OK, but sort of boring IMHO.
I tend to get that response from people. They are a slower paced band (in some aspects).
It’s not the pace, it’s just overall blandness. I listen to plenty of slow stuff.
