Spain is now effectively a state of the EU now, thanks to Lisbon.
With the threat of financial collapse in Spain, Greece and Ireland, I’m not sure how long the EU will last.
It’s more or less what’s been going on all over the world: I think every country now has a “stimulus bill” involving cars, refrigerators, washing machines and other “expensive” goods. Not to mention all the rest. John Keynes used to say that when the private sector refuses to spend the State must step in no matter how much deficit it has to run… there you have it! And to think Hayek said he wouldn’t write anything to confute Keynes’ theories since nobody would be so foolish to put them into practice. [^o)]
What’s worrying me right now are not the “stimulus bill” itself but the “shop till you drop” mentality governments are cultivating all over the world. No need to save (and often no point since interest rates are so low as to be a complete rip off), the only way forward is spend, spend, spend. And people are only too happy to oblige since we are in the shiny things season. What was the definition of stupidity again? “Doing exactly the same thing but expecting different results”?
We can only pray that it falls apart. If anything’s worse than national government, it’s international government.

They just reported yesterday that some of the banks loaned by the TARP was paid back - about $200 Billion.
That was some of the so-called profit tax payers were promised as part of the TARP legislation.
Looks like Obama wasted no time in spending that money - oops, I mean spending that I.O.U.
Obama is just following Hilter’s script for obtaining absolute power. Be all things to everyone, keep your plans vague, consolidate power by being the planner to fix only the current crisis, and ensure the fix to the current crisis creates opportunities for more extensive crises down the road. American laws are such that Obama doesn’t need the use of firing squads to implement his actions - he just needs a gullible electorate and a willing accomplice in the media.
Year One: quadruple the national deficit, over 30 czars added, over 100 new federal departments added, a good portion of labor and wealth transferred from the private sector to the state, means set forth to regulate every aspect of the American people’s lives, establishment of a political power structure where a minority of the people support the majority and that majority is dependent on the federal government. Since this approach is unsustainable, Obama is going to need a war or two to keep the wheels greased. I won’t go as far as say that he plans to exterminate the conservatives and libertarians, but it’s happened before at the hands other socialists.
Why don’t we all just admit that the only thing that can save us from “cap & trade”, “universal healthcare”, etc… is for EU and the USA to collapse. I mean, can you imagine trying, by means of education and politics, to reverse this nonsense step by step? The sun will explode by then.
I call for the complete collapse of the system. It is criminal so a collapse is desirable. The sooner the better.
And if a collapse brings a more totalitarian regime to power, then let it be. At least these socialists won’t be taking their blackberry for granted anymore.
