Hey I am in the middle of reading The Market for Liberty, and I don’t really understand the concept of unmovable property, and how to stop its theft.
I’ve listened to the book on tape, but I don’t recall that section.
Unmovable property would be land, and land is stolen by kicking the owner out; or alternatively, by claiming control and allowing the previous owner to stay as tenant. The latter is how the State operates.
lets say I own ten acres of land out in the country. What stops you from coming and building your house on a corner.
Ah, now I see what you are getting at.
You need to go back one step further and ask, why do you own it? Wilderness is converted into to property through use.
Check out what Rothbard has to say on the subject, here are the relevant chapters from Man, Economy, and State.
-
Property: The Appropriation of Raw Land.
-
Enforcement Against Invasion of Property.
And, what do you own, if anything? Try not paying the property taxes for a few years and see who REALLY owns the property.
