Some of the more well known “country rebels” are Waylon Jennings, Hank Williams (and his son and grandson, HW Jr. and HW III), David Allen Coe, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Billy Joe Shaver, etc.
You can find many “rebel” themes in some of the tunes of those guys.
Also Phil Ochs tends to have the heart in the right place, if you can get past the whole “I`m supporting Mao” deal.

The only Rage Against the Machine album I have listened to is the self titled. I don’t get much of a state-communist vibe from the lyrics, but there is a community spiritedness to the lyrics. Some of my favorite lyrics off the album:

All hip hop has a revolutionary edge, especially stuff like Dead Prez, The Coup (both marxist, sadly, but they do attack government corruption etc), Ras Kass (my favourite political rapper), Talib Kweli, Jeru tha Damaja, most 2Pac, Immortal Technique (leftist), Ice Cube, Goodie Mob…
