Mr. Ron Paul works as a congressman in the US Congress. Most people would know that, but to me, he means a lot more. At the end of my BS Economics last year, I had a lot of unanswered questions, eventually I found information online about Ron Paul and his Austrian Economics ideas. I don’t know about you folks, but down here in Miami, I can barely expose my ideas about the economy; but due to the present economic condition, I have been given a lot of more attention as people look for answers to their government continued failed policies.
After Obama’s victory, I wondered…………………if he made it; what went wrong with Ron Paul.
Obama is a great speaker of beautiful words filled with hope and patriotism. He seems to be very smart (the press says so) and careful on his moves, but I doubt he knows as much about Economics as Ron Paul does.
The present Economic condition speaks for itself…………………and this could not be a better time for a man like Ron Paul to be in Power. Yet, our political system fails to put the right man on the wheel. Instead, a fresh and unknown guy will be in the White House during one of the worst Economic crises a US President has ever faced.
I dont see it as an economic crises as much of a fundamental thought crisis. People are willingly giving away their rights and freedoms in order to have the government give them the things that they need. That to me screams of severe lack of responsibility and a utter lack of willingness to earn ones way, which is a Democrat preaching point. Partisan politics continue to prove their inefficience…
The US is by and large a conservative-libertarian country. If you don’t believe me, leave the student hangouts more often and talk to people. Most value hard work, most will gladly mind heir own business so long as you leave them alone. Most opposed the bailout, including many people I know in real estate who would love to swoop in and rehab properties, but they can’t tell when the government will let things bottom out. These people are increasingly withdrawing from public life, leaving the elections to the yuppies, students, freaks, and old people on the Democrat side, and the Rev. Hagee crowd for the Republicans.
Ron Paul was the thinking man’s candidate in every sense of the word, and his appeal was universal. His nomination would have rekindled the same sort of Silent Majority that the media were oh so certain didn’t exist in 1968. He represented true change, and most importantly a clean break with the failed Bush administration. Obama would be a tongue-tied, chain-smoking wreck headed back to Chicago.
The Republicans had this one last chance and they have blown it mightily. A new electorate has been imported and we are looking at Democratic rule til the cows come home. Twenty years from now, David Frum’s replacement will be writing letters to the six Republicans left in Congress urging them to reach out to young people and Hispanics on issues like welfare and the environment.
I’m quite sure that Ron Paul would have beaten Obama if he had been the Republican Party’s nominee. Maybe I need to be more cynical about voters, though.
I personally think the issue goes much further than simple labels. The fact that many I know expect & pretty much demand entitlements (regardless of their political affiliation) from “society” and/or “government” says far more than whether or not a majority is conservative libertarian.
However, I would agree that generally, people realize there is an importance of being fiscally conservative & socially liberal, despite a given individuals illogical quirks. Most of course rationalize not being either or by blaming something external, so I suppose nothing much will change in the coming years.
