I see the executive branch as a lost cause… so I’m not going to vote. I’ll still vote for conservative candidates in the locals though.

Otherwise I kinda do not like any of the candidates.. Mc Cain is a conservative and the Dems are pro-taxes..
As of right now what most concerns me is the government reinstating the draft (slavery) and forcing me to join the military to fight in a war I don’t agree with. This I think is somewhat likely since the neo-cons are pushing for a war with Iran and the liberals don’t seem to care one way or the other about stopping it. Gun control is my second biggest issue as I plan on learning how to shoot one of these days. If there was a Republican or Democratic candidate in the general election (because a third party right now doesn’t stand a chance at winning) who was genuinely against an interventionist foreign policy even if I didn’t agree with them on much else I’d vote for him over a Libertarian or other third party candidate that I agreed with almost everything they claimed they wanted to do. War is the biggest, costliest, and most destructive big government program there is.
But since none of the major candidates are genuinely non-interventionist this post like my last one is purely hypothetical.
Unfortunately, all three of the candidates are pro-war, anti-gun.
But that isn’t the point. Dr. Paul’s run for the presidency has inspired a lot of people, woke up a lot of people and gotten more people exposed to libertarian philosophy. If he continued his fight for the presidency on a Libertarian ticket it would provide him with yet another platform from which he can continue to spread the libertarian ideas of liberty and sound money. Will he win? No, I don’t think so but his run as a Libertarian candidate would expose more people to the LP and libertarian philosophy. It could, conceivably, convert the LP from a paper party to one that can actually win Congressional seats and state-level offices. Wouldn’t it be great if the LP ACTUALLY became the nations third largest party by winning seats in Congress? I think the LP would stand a good chance of gaining some ground if Dr. Paul pursued the presidency with that “L” by his name instead of an “R”.

I suspect that RP will get hundreds of thousands of votes in the general election via write in.
Although there might be a very small number of RP supporters who went to Obama, i have a very hard time believing that the other 99.9% of RP supporters would support a socialist candidate.
As it stands now Obama will be our next president. McCain’s only hope is that the GOP/Fox News/Conspiracy theory radio can get their propoganda machines tuned up in time to smear Obama. That or the Economy is at 4% GDP, and we win the war in Iraq by November. Barring those outcomes it’s socialism 2.0 here we come!

I’m not entirley sold that Socialism 2.0 will be achieved in the next presidency, as it wouldn’t matter if Jefferson (rest in peace) were president, anyone who goes into office in 2009 has a historical mess on their hands.
I would say though, that the ground work for more socialist growth can still be done in one such presidency, despite such messes. It’s all a bit dissillusioning; I most likley will not vote barring recent readings online, although that doesn’t prevent me from giving into emotions at some point & voting RP.
McCain’s presumptive nomination baffles me too. His voting record suggests liberal/socialist. He is a total RINO.
People with so much charisma scare me. They can make people believe nonsense.
Obama reminds me of Bill Clinton. Go back the presidential election of 1992. He was the cool candidate. He did cool things, like playing the Sax on Arsenio Hall. He made you feel good about yourself and your country. A sweet talker of sorts.
The old saying that “It’s the quiet ones you have to look out for” is typical fear-mongering. The truth is “It’s the charismatic ones you have to look out for”. The way dictators have universally risen to the top is to make people love them. Pick an enemy for the majority you wish to represent, exploit it and be the best friend of the people looking out for them. Needless to say our two chosen enemies in this race are terrorists and George W. The one that smiles the most is often the one you should distance yourself from the most. McCain is crazy but believes what he preaches. Clinton is pure evil, whether she believes her own rhetoric is debatable. One thing hard for most people to understand is that a compulsive liar lies to themselves the most and will convince themselves of even the most contradictory views. Obama is an idealist, as one has said he is a Black Supremacist, though probably considers himself far from it. I believe he is in fact the most dangerous of the three, because he is so charismatic. If McCain or Clinton are elected, every decision, no matter how benign in appearance will be scrutinized by a large number of the opposing part and moderates in their own. It will be assumed that either will attempt radical actions. How many would be watching for McCain to lose it and suspect the ‘gooks’ of harboring terrorists and try to nuke them? Likewise many will await Hillary’s rituals to summon the dark forces and enslave mankind to do her bidding, for their benefit of course. Obama would be able to extort half the wages of working US citizens to send care packages of snake oil to Africa and with his charisma the majority of people would only realize the horror years after.

For myself, if the LP nominates a non-libertarian, I’ll campaign for Ralph Nader, who is at least right on one issue and doesn’t pretend to be anything he isn’t.

What is Ralph right on?
Issue wise, two things - foreign war, and the war on drugs. Ideology wise, he is correct that our country is run by corporate kleptocrats and banksters - he just fails to comprehend that they do what they do because of government, and their ties to it. He thinks that government is corrupted by corporations, when the truth is the opposite, but at least he knows both are corrupt - and could not be otherwise.
I watched his speech last night, and he actually was quite good much of the time, whether talking about the government seizing land and selling it for $5/acre to major corporations, or praising Ron Paul for his foreign policy of non-intervention and his opposition to the war on drugs - and specifically for his questions to Betrayus.
On writing in Ron Paul - yes, he is still running, but he won’t be in November. If you feel better writing him in, go right ahead - your vote isn’t worth much anyway. However, many people plan to write him in with the idea in mind that, when the vote tallies are reported, Ron will be listed with his write-in votes, which is incorrect in most states. In most states, votes for write-ins who are not registered as such will be thrown out, and the only votes that appear in official tallies are for registered write-in candidates. (In the last Presidential election, I noted that John Hagelin received more votes as a write-in than the Constitution, Green, and Nader candidates together in my state district. The LP beat them all, though.) So, people who think writing him in is a way to get more attention to the cause will be incorrect - a more effective way would be voting for someone who pushes a similar message, but is running.
I actually think he has a chance of getting the nomination. He still has a few tricks up his sleeve. Though that chance is slim.
Absolutely. I know the votes won’t count for much. Even if it doesn’t hold value in the election, it holds value for me. Unless something or someone happens to be actually viable, my vote is still going to RP.
