It has been described as the first “Televised Great American Novel”. The HBO series the Wire was just phenomenal in my opinion. A piece where it is unabashedly shown just how the statist models have failed at pretty much every level. From the poor homeless man in the street uncapable of creating wealth for himself because of licencing laws and the inherent rampage, to the wasted genius of mostly every member of the cast.
I could’t help but feel after watching it that if there ever was a better piece showing just how much the state has failed in clear, easy to understand terms, this is it. The drug war, the lack of economic mobility, the school system, the police, everything. Being a foreigner, it was hard to fathom for me that an american city like Baltimore could be such a piece of hell, but in many respects it seemed far worse than some of the slums I see here in my home country.
Maybe getting more people to watch this series is a great way to get them started questioning the statist myth. And while they could argue these poor people need yet more money thrown at them, seeing how the mayor of Baltimore goes from dynamic young idealist to power hungry beaureaucrat should be enough to dispel the idea that honest politicians can fix the problem. They dont exist, the system does not allow them to.
