Is anyone here donating to any humanitarian organizations that are helping the poor folks in Haiti right now? Why or why not?
Seems like there’s a lot that our funds could do to help the people without helping the state.
No. I can’t afford to give money every time an earthquake/tidal wave/mudslide/giant insect invasion hits somewhere.
It’s a better use of my money than spending it on online porn.
Unless you have people on the ground that you trust, there’s really nothing you can do to help.
If you trust organizations like the red cross, send them money. That’s the most that is effective.
You could always give even more of your money to the US military; seeing as they’ll probably get involved.
In short: When we write political philosophy, we consider the greater good, or the non aggression principle. Unselfish things, because that’s the way the political debate goes.
In real life, we’re a bunch of short-sighted materialists. And pornography addicts.

What I take away from this site is do what you want that doesn’t impose on others and you’re OK. That’s the non aggression principle. The argument is that this produces the greatest good. All of the above has nothing to do with unselfishness.
Charity is a moral appeal to our higher nature that some people respond to. I think that those who respond are better in some way than those who don’t. I sense you feel the same way. But even those who don’t aren’t being hypocritical if they believe in the non aggression principle, or that it produces the greatest good.
As for porn, there are better sites for it than here I suspect.
