What exactly does Obama hope to gain from going to war against Iran?

I personally can’t figure it out. Is it that he wants to be popular with the supporters of the Israel, or that he wants to further bankrupt us, or is it that he thinks it will give him a better political standing, or something else?

Surely he knows they’re not a threat to us.

There is basically the belief that Ahmadinejad will use nuclear weapons against Israel. He has made statements that he doesn’t like Jews and that they should go away. Also his government is not very nice to its own people. For these reasons and others, the current Iranian government is seen as a threat to the lives of millions and the country should be attacked preemptively to prevent future aggression from Iran.

I’d say Obama actually doesn’t want to. But he is too much of a weakling to stand up to people who do.

Well, he hasn’t said it yet, but the sanctions he’s supporting indicates that war against Iran is on its way.

All of the above. War is the health of the state. During wartime, the state can substantially increase it’s power with the support of the people. That’s why perpetual war is the ultimate goal of coercive governments. And they have succeeded here in the US with the neverending War on Terror.

As far as Obama’s personal reasons, a new war with the public’s support could boost his popularity and help him get reelected. Not sure he’ll be able to pull it off, however, being the winner of Nobel Peace Prize and everything. War is Peace.

Keeping the nuclear club as exclusive as possible. After gets nukes there’s no more bullying. If a state ever had reason to go to war, this was it.

Iran doesn’t have nukes. But it’s a quite large country with decent military and good air defense systems from Russia, so a war could get very messy.
