The Federal Income Tax is pretty annoying, and I don’t like the concept of going to jail just because I don’t want to fund a war with money I worked for. However, you get refunded pretty well in December.
FAFSA, I’m on Financial Aid, it covers all of my College expenses, and I get a ton of money back to spend on whatever I want after I’ve spent it on books. I used it to pay off the bank, and buy some books and video games. I’m getting a new computer next semester.
Pell Grants give someone hope about their future. I had a friend who was stressed over weather or not she could go to College, and Obama’s education plan to extend the pell grants made her happy.
I understand its statist deficit through taxation, but how does this effect us negatively at all?
Why are you entitled to someone else’s money to pay for your schooling, computers, books and video games?
Why only take into consideration yourself, or the person benefited from the redistribution of wealth? Why not take into consideration the person who was taxed? If the money came from an investor, why not consider the people who are no longer aided through what the investment would bring? If it was taken from the consumer, what makes you a more worthwhile recipient of that money than the laborer would have made on the goods that the person taxed would have bought with that money?
Well, if Obama makes her happy, then I suppose it is ok if he gives her someone else’s money. But don’t you think Obama should only be able to give his own money?
Here is a less expensive idea; instead of the $5350 going to pay for college, have it spent on ecstasy. A decent ecstasy pill will last about 5 hours and cost about $10, with that every day your friend will be much happier and less stressed than if she went to college. And that’s $1700 less that doesn’t have to be removed from the market. (It can then be used to produce cheaper and more effective ecstasy.)
I don’t really care, its a good way to roll in cash and support myself so I don’t need to work while in school. Its natural for people to not care about who is at the expense of their benefit. Liberals will argue that the majority of the tax money is coming from the wealthy people, who can support themselves with having to pay for taxes anyway.
And what would be a better alternative? Education is expensive, and these things make it so that everyone who wants to go to school can. It would be a waste of life if I turned 18, and had to 4-5 years before I can even begin to work towards an Associates Degree.
So take out loans. You’re just going to have to pick a real major that will let you pay them off. No liberal arts for you on the free market..

My dad teaches at an all black university in SC. All his students are there on full ride federal grants. His students can’t read, can’t write, and complain if he doesn’t give all A’s and B’s. Btw these are graduate level students.

But, it’s the wealthy who invest, and so in the long-run you are not hurting just the wealthy, but all the laborers who would have otherwise had jobs. In any case, if it comes down to the “I don’t really care” argument, then there really was no point in beginning the argument, because it is clear that you are not interested in being rational.
First of all, in a free market education would probably be cheaper (you probably wouldn’t go through general education classes, either). Second of all, why would it be a waste? There are plenty of people who cannot immediately afford to attend the university. I am 22, and I am transferring into SDSU at the age of 23. That is a five year period after I graduated from high school. I don’t feel like I’ve wasted anything. I have ten times more experience than the average 22 year old university graduate, which gives me a clear advantage in the job market. Besides, there needs to be a realization that four-year college is not for everybody. Many people should instead attend trade schools, or set up their own business (I know many people who are virtually millionaires, and they barely graduated from highschool).
So you support putting a gun to someone’s head in order to make yourself (and your friend) happy? You think it is morally correct to take money from one person and give it to another? All because YOU think it’s quite natural to not care about who is at the expense of their benefit?
How many students attend college and don’t do what they studied to be? To me, it seems like a huge waste of time to push kids to go to college right after they get out of high school. When, instead, what you ought to be doing is going out into the real world to attain real world experiences before deciding on a life study. This is what I did, to a degree. I didn’t know what I wanted to do until I was 29 (for others, it might be earlier or later).
You could be spending those 4-5 years saving up to go to college, or take a a job while going to college, to pay for it. But this all presupposes you don’t know why college is expensive to begin with.
Because the ends don’t justify the means. If the ends justified the means, then any action would be valid, as long as a suitable end could be provided. Also, beware of the accounting fallacy. The government’s favorite scam is to take X, then give back a precentage of X, then use that as evidence of being moral/helpful/necessary/etc.
I agree that its a waste for kids who don’t want to take school seriously. Additionally, loans and FAFSA is spent on people who are just party animals, but the party animals usually drop out after the first year when they realize they can’t handle college.
My point being, most people start college at my age, there wouldn’t be any way to meet girls if I went to school 5-7 years later after High School. Having a year or more off from schooling after you graduate can seriously cripple your work-ethic. Its hard to get back into school after taking an entire year off. I for one don’t want to be an intellectual working at a Grocery store for 6-7 years around a lot of idiots and teenagers who are incapable of cooperating with other people. I want to learn, I like going to school, I would ahve felt like my life is crushed if I was an intellectual but may have not had a future.
Besides the first two years of College are mostly exploration anyway, if I wanted to get a Ph.D and go to school to become a doctor, starting at the age of 29 would not be a good idea. It would take me until I am 40-50 to finally settle down with life.
I go to a Community College
At times, I have felt like I was wasting my time at College since I have no choice but to take shitty Gen. Ed classes like Remedial Math and Public Speaking. I don’t like those classes, and they cost money, I felt like they have taken up some of my productive time. However, the Math class is beneficial to me because I was never good at Math, and this has increased by ability a lot to be able to handle higher math like Calculus.
It must really suck that the U.S is not like Europe where if you don’t go to College right after High School you are practically screwed, since there is no Community College or Associates Degree. I sure am glad that Europe’s colleges are also worse then the U.S’ thus most serious students come here to go to College. Our Education system is REALLY horrible.
