i’d like to know when this meme among leftists, especially the young ones started.
i think its an amazing thing though. They have some way of shutting down debate on every single issue, even if has nothing do with race. such as welfare, if you oppose it then you must hate black people who live in the inner city. If you think the government should not issue marriage licences to gay couples, then you must be bigoted or zomg Homophobe!

For start ask them what is wrong with racism, bigotry, homophobia?
Probably around the same time they started buying off various groups. For example, you will see them target Christain fundamentalist type people/churches as they tend to be white Republicans (how many films/propaganda absolutly demonize these people) and to a lesser extant Catholics and other “hardline” religion in generalm but they will leave alone or even praise black Gospel type churches (even though they share very similar beliefs to fundies) and Jews.
It is the same way righties will call you unpatriotic (their buzz word), when you don’t support their military agendas, values, or police.
They are the racists for supporting unions, minimum wage laws and brutal police.

I was called Sean Hannity a few days ago since I interpretted this guys statement- “I am with out health insurance and was in a bad accident and used the charity care at the hospital, which in a way is like a small version on Nationalized Health care” as “Thats like comparing a a lone baseball player to the world series”
After another exchange of policy views he accepted me as anarchist as he claims to be one as well. Go figure, the wiley world of Anarcho-Communism where reason and logic are voluntary condiments on the side to anti-state statist chesse burger.

It’s been this way for longer than anyone can remember: just substitute what’s fashionable as an infaming label at the moment to “racist”.
The Roundheads used to call everybody who didn’t agree with them “papist”; the Stalinist “capitalist saboteur”; the Franks “Lombard”; the Red Guards “anti revolutionary” etc. Did something change? No.
Liberals (in the American sense) or elegant leftists have this obsession with “diversity”, “enviromentalism” etc which can be only explained in one way: that’s their religion. And like a religion you don’t need to give explanations and you don’t need to be coherent. For example what kind of coherence is decrying the fact that the oppressed people of Tibet cannot use their language and live according to their customs while ramming our “values” down the throats of Hindu Kush tribesmen? They don’t need to give an explanation, except the usual hazy catchall justifications of “advancing democracy” and “increasing their welfare”. They look very much the clergymen Emperor Julianus used to make fun of.
It started being used in that fashion in the early 1980s, when people opposed to the USAian ‘Equal Opportunity Act’ were defamed as being racist. I don’t believe that the label ‘racist’ was used in questions other than racism before that.
They must use emotional arguments to preclude reasoned debate. It’s the only way that they can appear to win.
