Anyway the best chances for survival are in the old standards of Switzerland, Norway, New Zealand, Rural Australia (Not Urban Australia) and the South Pacific Islands. I figure these have the least chance to have wealth hungry bureaucrats stealing wealth in the forms of goods as the currencies have zero value.
I’d think I’d want to remain in the good ole USA. I mean we have by far the most powerful military in the world. I’d be scared to live anywhere else.
Don’t think for one minute that Obama, Bush, etc would not have US military, itself starved for cash like the rest of society, run roughshod across the country side stealing and pilligaging looking for anything of value. What will happen when the soldiers get paid with worthless currency? Is the government going to pay them in gold from Ft Knox? Is there gold in Ft Knox?
If, really when, the Feds adopt another round of gold stealing, they will not be able to accomplish this by themselves as their hold on local governments will be tenuous. So they will rely on the US military to do their enforcement for them. It happened with David Koresh, why not you?
I would take my yacht and go to the Easter Islands…

How did Norway get in there? They suffered a pretty nasty occupation at the hands of the Germans and they are now NATO members with a border to Russia, they have loads of oil and they also have the only port close to Swedish iron ore (and probably the only one in the Arctic Ocean) that doesn’t freeze over in winter.
With the invention of Nuclear Weapons, there will never be another world war.

Probably should not have included Norway but it is remote and unaccessible and is rich in reservers of oil and other commodities so it will survive unlike most European states.
I would move back to Mexico.
Norway would probably be occupied but there would be little since in an occupation force actually having any precense in the mountain in the north so I guess you would be pretty ok there.
My grandmother lived in such a region of Norway during the Nazi occupation. There where no German troops there but they had a shortage of everything, which they solved by brewing liquor in there basements and selling it on the Swedish side of the border to get Swedish currency and buy food and cloths in Sweden. This was actually how she meet my Swedish grandfather so I guess I can thank Hitler for my existence…
The open border alone proves the occupation force didn’t give a shit about what people did out there … in general you are probably pretty well of in any scarcly populated region as long as you have plenty of canned food when the war starts. Though I think the Swedish forests would be better then the Norweigan mountains, cause you can shoot some moose there …
Isn’t there already one going on now? When exactly did WW1 or WW2 start? Certainly for some parties WW1 started when the Duke was capped but not for everybody. As for WW2, there was the genocide in Russia and the destruction of German society going on long before the first shots against the French and British were fired.
Today, the USA and its cabal of serf nations is busting itself financially with crazed violent aggression against people who have never harmed anyone in the country (Except Mexico and idiotic, expensive, Big Pharma Protecting War on Drugs that is now just a plain old war). It has 5 active wars for no real reason (Columbia, Mexico(And you thought the the 19th century wars with Mexico and Spain resolved this, WRONG!!!), Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan, and Palestine, AND is threatening and aggressing against Iran and North Korea. The troubling one is Afghanistan as it has done nothing but expand into Pakistan and worst of all is being fought with wimpy drones and other high-tech gizmos that can hold no territory, aggrivate the locals with indescriminant killing and show weakness to the enemy.
Now Pakistan is the other place that is already at war and has been for 50 years with India. Which side is the USA taking? Can the USA attack into Pakistan and still be allied with its government. If so then how long can the government there last.
So in my humble opinion like all giant orgies of murder and destructions termed World Wars, WWIII is already taking place and unless the USA acts it will begin including more nations until it becomes the World War we know it can be.
And don’t forget Somalia where the US has paid countries, most recently Ethiopia, to attempt the take overs of the Clans there. The results have been tragic.
@Bogart: One big difference now compared to the start of other big wars is however that one US Aircraft Carrier task force has more firepower then most of the other governments on this planets. You need a rather large counter-coallition before there will be an actual world and the US aren’t antagonizing any countries that could for such a coalition. The muslim world don’t stand a chance even if they unite … it would be bloody but no world war. They could probably keep up resistance for a long time, but there regular armies would fall like card houses and sporadic terrorism does not constitute a world war.
Maybe if they could get China and/or Russia on there side we would actually have a situation that can lead to world war. Russias army is shit but they have the military technology and no problems with fascism and fast mobilization in times of crisis.
I’m not sure Switzerland will be as safe the next time around. They are not as neutral as they used to be, now that they are a part of the UN, left the gold standard, and are becoming increasingly socialistic.
All the bombs and high tech gizmos known are not giong to provide victory in an aggressive war of occupation. Only terror through violence in its most horrible forms can control a group of people. Unmanned killing machines can inflict the terror but at what cost and they are a statement of weakness not strength.
As for defense through aggression, look at Sept 11, 3 of 4 attacks were successful, two extremely successful, and the total cost was the price getting student visas for 20 people and some flight classes. Compare that with the cost of a drone? Or a carrier group?
And never forget, the world is almost over the trading of US technology for stuff and is tiring of trading US IOUs for stuff. All of these aggressive actions are pissing off customers of US products. At some time the US is going to have so many people hate it that they refuse to do business with its citizens/subjects.

In the book Conquer the Crash (2002, 2009), Robert Prechter concluded that the safest place to live in case of SHTF would be Australia, New Zealand, Canada, AND the US. Prechter has been a long time bear and has been predicting something like WWIII in the near future.
