Socialism only works if there is a host for the parasite to feed off. Meaning the majority have to be the ones not getting anything. Once in a while this majority wins an election.
As for where is the poverty, it takes a while to impoverish a very wealthy country. But we are getting there, no?

Well in the uk socialist governments are popular. People have a lot of faith in the state. Socialism sells, politicians standing up saying that they are going to give people free healthcare, free houses, free welfare cheques will get peoples votes. Also remember that it is within the interest of the organisations and the employees of the state that are dependent on the state to encourage state spending and socialism. Government workers will not be calling for cuts because that would go against their interest. But in the uk now, we have a new prime minister that is talking about decreasing the size of the state and making cuts. But taxes are not going down any time soon and we still hear about wasteful government projects. He has also not surprisingly had a lot of opposition from the state employees. But the tax payers are tired of high taxes and inflation is making it more difficult. However due to the pro state education they received in school, they will call for no cuts but less taxes at the same time.

still no adequate answer. in my opinion its the social agenda of the republicans that keeps them in power. this country is overwhelmingly economically statist.
Well, they do. But it is my impression that the human mind is really geared to follow authority and a generally ‘rightist’ set of ideas. So, when given a chance between socialists and rightists, most people would go for the last. So, I’d say that socialists win elections only when the right has no personalities to wrest power from them.
