I was watching Stossel’s episode on libertarians and the recent election; and Ron Paul seemed to be pretty keen on Justin Amash. Aside from his borders and aborition position he seems to be pretty gun on a lot of libertarian and Constitutionalist issues, I especially like that when he articulates free markets it’s not a total mystery what he means by it like the republicrats. This is a very cool vote:

In May 2009, he voted, along with other Republicans, against extending unemployment benefits for people in job training programs, a measure which would allow the state to receive more than $138 million in federal stimulus money for the programs. He said the bills would increase unemployment in the state.

Not many politicians have the balls to reject Federal pork which would go to people on the dole. That’s political suicide in the leftist states.

Do you guys have any thoughts? Seen him anywhere?

Side Notes: Ellis Henican seems to be a pretty honest Progressive. Very big government, but he’s doesn’t have that smug superiority that the NPR people do.

I don’t like Justin’s position on marriage. Nowhere in his position statements does he say that marriage should be left up to the states. It also sounds like he wants the USA to guarantee the security of the State of Israel. So far, I have not been able to ascertain what Justin’s views are on Operation New Dawn, the operations in Afghanistan, the War on Terror in general, the Islamic Republic of Iran, al-Qaeda, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, etc. To me these are pretty important issues. With the information he has provided he would not get my vote.

He seems like a Goldwater conservative, with the exception of gay rights, who are much better than the “I want smaller, constitutional government, erm except I want medicare,social security, regulations, farm subsidies and corparate handouts!” neocons.

Amash is alright. I live in Michigan and I’m a fan of his Facebook, even though he’s not representing my district. Overall this place would be better off if we had more of his kind in office. I don’t know if he’s “The Next Ron Paul”, but as long as Liberty-Caucus-types win the small battles, we’ll have more influence.
