Think how much more $500,000 would do for LvMI, say the academy and the only means worth pursuing to attain freedom i.e. public education, than Schiff getting to be the Ron Paul of the Senate.
Are you a Keynesian? Can we also activate the multiplier effect?
My issue is that the assumption is that $500k will play any large factor in whether he wins or not.
What about Ron Paul in Congress? $500k is easily worth it - if you had to buy it. My point is folks give Schiff $500k or whatever, he doesn’t get in - all that wasted capital. In that scenario, clearly $500k to anything else is worth it. lol

I say donate to both fronts. Per person its not much. Uncertainty is always a factor, so you do both; you give money to Schiff and hedge your bets by helping things like the Mises academy.
His foreign policy leaves something to be desired. If you check out the debate between him and the other GOP candidates he does seem to buy into the ‘Iran is a threat’ line and while he wants a general withdrawal from Afghanistan, but still wants some US force to remain there. He’s decent on economics, but shaky on foreign policy. It doesn’t help that his website makes any mention of such an important issue.
Iran is threat. Schiff is right.
But we should (a) let Israel handle it instead of (b) messing around in the Middle East ourselves and at the same time pestering Israel over condominiums to be “politically balanced”.
BTW, I don’t see how any libertarian can say anything bad about Schiff et al, given that they personally (as did his father) put themselves in legal danger by openly protesting contrary to economics activities of the government.
A threat to whom? Iran has never threatened me, and even if one buys into the myth of national defense it’s hard to see how Iran is a threat to the United States or even Israel. What bothers me is that he hasn’t fleshed it out, and when he has he leaves something to be desired. He’s better than McMahon and Simmons, but that’s not enough.
Iran has threatened Isreal, and reasonable people can argue that there is a possibility of a nuclear weapon falling into terrorist hands because of Iran’s close relation with them. While he is not Ron Paul on foreign policy, he does not support protracted nation building instead advocating eliminating the threat which is only the nuclear weapon.
Peter Schiff is probably the most prominent Austrian spokesperson today other than Ron Paul. If your object is educating the populace, having an articulate Austrian in the Senate is probably the best method to spread our ideas. Though Ron Paul is an Austrian, Peter Schiff does a much better job explaining basic economics. Because of his ability to filibuster the debt ceiling he has the ability to change the national conversation focusing attention on him and his reasoning.
Finally, because of the coming economic collapse students who wish to stay in the U.S. should support him because he represents the best opportunity for reversing the statist tide, even if only slightly.
I don’t care for his views on foreign policy, but he’s almost spot on when he comes to economics. Besides, he’s always mentioning the Austrian school and I generally like his video blogs on youtube.
But is Iran a threat to Israel? And why is the possibility of Iran gaining a nuclear weapon our concern?
The problem about him as an educator; if he becomes a senator and then ends up as a hawk or at the best not a critic of say military action against Iran then folks can point to him and say " Hey Peter Schiff is pretty libertarian, he’s an Austrian, and he supports action against Iran." Foreign policy and economics go hand in hand. Schiff should tie in the costs of war with the current economic crisis, but as far as I know he hasn’t.

I would also be pretty surprised if he talks about intervention in Iran in a positive light considering his stance on every economic issue. It would be pretty odd for that to be exempt from his criticism.
I stand corrected, but his position on Iran is still a bit disappointing.
Schiff is probably the best impromptu speaker on economics that has ever run for office. I would love to see him debate Obama or see him in action filibustering everything on the Senate floor. Having Schiff in the Senate probably wouldn’t really change much, but it would be nice to see someone with common sense and knowledge of the austrian school, and it would help get our message out there.
Sometimes, I do worry about his foreign policy views, but I don’t think he would vote for more war because he has acknowledged the financial predicament that we are in.
