I was reading a book i recently bought from the mises store, “Reassessing the Presidency”, and early on, it talks a lot about the electoral college and of course, it mentions the Constitution didn’t say who could vote.
It brought to my attention that too much democracy (popular election of electors) may have been how Lincoln got elected.
If the State legislatures in New York had voted for the electors at that time, would they have voted for Stephen A Douglas meaning the Southern-controlled House would’ve voted for Breckinridge and he would’ve become President?
Lincoln wouldn’t have been as popular among the State legislatures as he was with the people, I imagine, due to the fact he had a long hiatus out of Congress and he lost the Senate race when they were elected by the state legislatures.
I’ve always felt oppressed by the majority, due to the fact that I’m a paleolibertarian, so I wish the 17th Amendment had never been ratified.
