For any of those in music or in the arts, here is some great advice from Steve Albini:

So far as I know everything he says is at least worth paying attention to in terms of music application and philosophy. As a producer, a recording artist (Big Black and Shellac), and a commentator helping other artists to really know what they are getting themselves into.
Oh and he is kick ass to watch live. I’ve seen Shellac play like 4 times, highly recommended. I just saw Wire this last weekend and they rocked though they didn’t do much off of Pink Flag and Chairs missing. Still though, it’s Wire and they are touring the US.
^ I am filled with envy. Shellac and Wire are soo good.
On the other hand, I saw Godspeed You Black Emperor a few weeks ago. Greatest show for a single band I have ever been to period.
EDIT: Awesome coincidence, Albini has produced one of Godspeed’s albums.

I want to introduce a band that solved a big problem for me. I really like swing like Glenn Miller. The problem with Glenn Miller is, the sound is very poor. Yes this sound delivers its own vibe and feelings, and I can appreciate that. But I am a sound fetishist. And I luckily found the band Indigo Swing. They are great, have a look:
I really can recommend the records All Aboard and their first one titled after the band name. I only recently got “Red light” and I had not the time yet to listen to it, but I’m sure it’s great as well. Hope there is someone out there who needs swing in high class sound too

I have to agree with earlier posts, there is an interesting number of progressive fans (I count myself). I would be remiss if I did not mention King Crimson, with their legendary seven lineups and dozens of members. Rush goes without saying.
I was on a folk metal kick for a while, and I noticed that skylien’s avatar was the cover of Skyclad’s “Folkemon,” but I preferred their earlier stuff.

I listen to mostly underground rap. Probably not very Libertarian to listen to artists like Immortal Technique, but as a rapper, myself, I appreciate the artistic ability. Not so much the (deluded) message. Though, he does give good insight onto why progressives behave the way they do.

In a recent post on Marginal Revolution, Alex T was thinking about pop bands that are accessible but (for whatever reason) never made it big.
That got me thinking about The Connells. They toured with REM. And at on one tour DMB was their opening act. But, for whatever reason, they never really took off.
I had never heard of them unitl a couple of years. But of friend of mine that grew up in Raleigh NC said they basically owned that town in the late 80s/early 90s. Here are a couple of their better songs I thought I would share.

Some things to consider though:
a) It honestly is a crapshoot industry; once you get past a certain point there is A LOT of luck
b) it is an awful industry, at least for many band trying to make it “big” - check out that Steve Albini link I had a few posts up for an idea of that
c) it is an over saturated industry ; there are way more bands now than there were 10 years ago and way more ways to get the music out cheaply
d) there are logistical nightmares that would make your head spin for non rich people who wish to stay together for a period of time
e) your local cover band makes 10 times more money than a touring band of musicians who play original music
