Interesting notes on the industry. I wonder if continuing rise of digital music will make it tougher or easier to “make it”. On the one hand, you would think it might make it easier because you can share and advertise your music globally. But I know a lot of venues have been closing in my area due to low attendance (partially due, I am thinking, to the rise of personal music over the past 3 decades). So I would think that would make it harder to get your music out locally. I dunno.

This is really tough to say, I think we are in the middle of a huge paradigm shift which hasn’t settled yet. Plus there are odd ways to get music out there (amazon, rock band, etc) it is crazy to think about. If I had to speculate, maybe there will be more “bigish” cult following type bands and less national/international “star” type bands.

Interesting in my area (the Great Lakes) where the economy particularly sucks all the major venues I am used to are still there; the economy has been down so there is that - but the venues are still there.
Maybe it is just a weird regional thing, new local zoning/legislation, or simply a culture change. Or if you live in a college town that could be an issue (lots of hassles with those bars)

Yeah the old Skyclad records rock but I really like all records of Skyclad, also the ones since Martin Walkyier left. Have you tried their last record “In the all…together”?
The music business has been increasingly about image promotion as copyability has advanced. Simple composition is not a living these days. The money is made jumping around a stage with pyrotechnics, music videos that get TV ad ratings, etc.
It was hacked and although I don’t think anything was deleted, other than the index page, I decided to discontinue it. I have a free blogger I started, although there’s only two posts (started it on Thursday). I’m really not sure if I’ll be very active on it though (although, probably yes – blogging is addicting).
Are two favs. Pitchfork is right that he wears his Kanye West influence on his sleeve. But he is hardly the only artist to do so (uh, Drake?) and I don’t think music has to be breath takingly original to still be worth listening to (considering the indie rock bands Pitchfork typically louds I wouldn’t think they prized originality very highly either).
